Twoface2 #529 Posted June 22, 2015 Could you post the GG Mod instructions? Is it similar to the Lynx II Mod, or is it more complicated?
McWill #530 Posted June 22, 2015 Could you post the GG Mod instructions? Is it similar to the Lynx II Mod, or is it more complicated? It is as easy to install as the LYNX-II mod. I am still making the Quick Guide. It's a lot of work. I hope I can post it tomorrow. I also want to make a video on YouTube Features: GG and SMS games in fullscreen on 3.5" LCD and VGA out, jumper for scanlines ON/OFF on VGA out, jumper for retro style on 3.5" LCD ON/OFF, switching the 3.5" LCD / VGA mode with backlight regulator => if 3.5" LCD is ON, you also have TV-Out (RGB with CSync, but GG games are with big border on TV); if 3.5" LCD is OFF, you have VGA out in fullscreen. GadgetUK #531 Posted June 22, 2015 (edited) Wow that's tremendous - I am really hyped about the GG screen now lol!!!!! Edited June 22, 2015 by GadgetUK
Greg2600 #532 Posted June 22, 2015 Quick question, is the GG compatible with the SEGA and Majesco designs? Obviously most wouldn't bother upgrading the Majesco.
obschan #533 Posted June 22, 2015 Am gonna be the joy killer, buy maybe someone can provide a thread link to continue the gg discussion...
7800fan #534 Posted June 22, 2015 Yeah should have a separate thread for GG in the classic section since it's not Atari related. I should point out all 4 GG I worked on, all of them has LCD soldered on like Lynx 1 so it will be more challenging than modding Lynx 2 having to desolder and remove the LCD without damaging it (ie to save as spare or to sell on eBay) If you don't care for the old LCD, scissor would make a quick job of that cable
7800fan #535 Posted June 22, 2015 One quick question for those who has early GG model that works with a tuner, will the tuner still work with the new LCD? Since the tuner has external port for AV devices, one could plug anything and watch on new LCD. (still redundant like back when the tuner was new, major battery guzzler compared to just playing game)
GadgetUK #536 Posted June 22, 2015 Maybe, depends on how the GG handles the video input. If the GG is processing the video input and outputting just like it does a game then I would say there's a chance it should work. I've got one with the TV adaptor so i will test that when I get my new screen.
McWill #537 Posted June 23, 2015 Quick question, is the GG compatible with the SEGA and Majesco designs? Obviously most wouldn't bother upgrading the Majesco. I've tested different boards and all were running well.
McWill #538 Posted June 23, 2015 One quick question for those who has early GG model that works with a tuner, will the tuner still work with the new LCD? Since the tuner has external port for AV devices, one could plug anything and watch on new LCD. (still redundant like back when the tuner was new, major battery guzzler compared to just playing game) I haven't tested it yet. But I can do it today later. I guess it will work, but if not, I can try to implement that too.
McWill #539 Posted June 25, 2015 It doesn't work with TV tuner, yet. The space in CPLD is limited, but I try to implement it in the future.
GadgetUK #540 Posted June 25, 2015 I am suprised at that! Is it due for sync differences?
Greg2600 #541 Posted June 25, 2015 I think I'll stick to watching things on my cell phone rather than over composite through a GG!
GadgetUK #542 Posted June 25, 2015 Yeah, it's really not a big deal!
7800fan #543 Posted June 25, 2015 It's no big deal, just surprised that tuner didn't work since it connected via cart slot. I thought the tuner did all of the work and feed data straight into video for LCD but I guess it worked differently.

I thought the tuner did all of the work and feed data straight into video for LCD but I guess it worked differently. The TV tuner is making all the job with it's circuit (clock, sync, data ...), the internal GG circuit is off (except the internal switches of the ASIC: from TV tuner via cart slot to the ASIC directly to the LCD)
GadgetUK #545 Posted June 26, 2015 Thanks for the info! That shows they probably thought about the pass through in the original GG design. Very interesting!
manic23 #546 Posted June 28, 2015 I know there are hundreds of posts on this thread saying how awesome this screen is, but I just had to add one myself, the screen is just stunning, I think that the only way that this screen could look this good is with the help of the dark arts, witchcraft maybe? Fairy Dust? not sure. I got McWill to do the job for me, as I am a clumsy great galoot and would probably have damaged it had I carried out the work myself, I have never seen such professionalism for a home MOD. He even did a check list that he sent back stating the quality of the condition, sound etc.I have just sent my Game Gear to McWill so really looking forward to getting that back.Just one quick question re the Game Gear, does anyone know if the TV tuner will work with this new screen? Obviously the TV will not work I know that but I was hoping to use the AV input to plug in other devices and use the GG as a kind of mini monitor, not sure if that is possible with the replacement screen? Lamer Deluxe tm #549 Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) Great job with the GG display! What does the retro-style jumper do? I might wait for the TV Tuner support, because I have one, not that there is any TV signal here anymore though. 7800fan #550 Posted June 29, 2015 Wouldn't a $5 Goodwill portable TV be better than a rare tuner and a $140 LCD mod? Many of the portable LCD TV I see at Goodwill has A/V input. If those are too small, look for portable DVD players as well. I have a 7" DVD player with AV input and it's the older 4:3 display and a 9" player with 16:9 LCD. I don't think I spent more than $10 total for both It doesn't need working DVD player part, just that the LCD works.
