gamer-stu
How many cables does your monitor out cable have? I ask because if you have more than two then the cable may be a split chroma/luma cable (s-video precursor). If this is the case then the chroma cable will be what you want to plug in to the "yellow" RCA video input. Also, many of the cables back in the day didn't adhere to a standard color scheme. So the yellow cable coming out of your monitor port may actually be audio. Have you tried swapping the plugs in to your tv? I don't think there's a danger to your hardware if you accidentally plug video in to sound, or vice versa.

A stock 800XL doesn't have the Chroma for s-video(only Monochrome & composite), it needs a minor modification for Chroma output.

Understood Bill, in fact I just did that mod myself recently. Quite a difference and very worthwhile. But if the monitor cable is one that has 3 output cables, i.e. chroma, luma and audio, then I believe the combined video signal from a stock 800XL would come through on the chroma line. +Larry
If you are using the yellow RCA input on the TV, then it is composite video. If however the TV inputs have red, green, blue markings, then it is component video and RED should be composite. And... is your input on the TV menu set to Composite? And you do have a regular 4-RCA line video cable (Chroma, Luma, Composite, Audio). Sounds like you have the wrong line connected, assuming that the TV can display the Atari video. -Larry
LYNXGUY
gamer-stu3 Red_White _Yellow The red and white seem to be audio and the yellow seems to be the video. . . . . . . fujidude
Take a look at this page for the pinout info. Then use a multimeter or ohm meter and do a continutity test on your UNPLUGGED cable, so you know which RCA connectors trace back to which pins. Then plug in the RCA plug that goes to pin 4 to your composite in on your TV. Edited February 19, 2015 by fujidude

fujidude
Here are my TV connections. . . . . . . You will want to connect to set 8 on your TV. The computer has one monural RCA for sound, so you will want a 1F to 2M RCA Y adapter to spit the computer sound into left and right sound in on your TV. You need to get a meter out and verify your interconnect cable. Make sure all the sleave parts of the RCA connectors go to a ground pin on the Atari monitor port. Make sure you note which center parts of the RCA connectors go to which pin on the Atari, so you know which is composite video. Whichiver lead oon the cable goes to pin 4 on the atari is the composite video. Pin 3 is the sound. Take a look at the linked web page above for pin orientation. Sleepy
I don´t know which kind of connector your TV set offers, european TV have a "Hosiden"-connetor for S-Video: For this you need a cable like this: The left connector feeds video (y/c), the right cinch-connectors F-Bas and Audio (mono). The Y-adaptor feeds the mono-sound into the TVs stereo-input. Sleeπ

fujidude
Why are you hostile to people.. That's something I noticed on your posts lately.... If he doesn't respond the way you expected, just let it go.. It's looking the the guy is trolling. He brings up a problem, gets good information on finding a solution. Instead of responding he just makes individual posts like this is what my TV has or in another one... this is the cable. No questions. No aknowledgement of information already provided which actually addresses exactly what he was looking to do. I've been short on sleep and probably a little thin on patience lately too for reasons I won't get into, but if you want to fall all over this knock yourself out. LYNXGUY
Well the only thing I can say is the cable is connected properly from my 800XL to my TV and there is only 1 place for the cable to go in to my TV and 1 place for the cable to go into my 800XL and all I get is a black screen and I am not as tech savy as you people are, even the people that I bought the cable from can't understand why it doesn't work either. I'm going to buy a RCA to HDMI cable or adapter and try that but I'm not sure when that will be so for now I will take a long break from my project. . . . . . . Without knowing for sure which lead goes to which pin, you really can't be sure it's hooked up correctly. The colors on the leads may not mach up to the function you would think when plugged into an Atari. I'm not saying they aren't correct, and there isn't something else going on, but it could be that simple. If you own a multimeter I could tell you how to use it to find out for sure. If you are interested. If you buy a RCA to HDMI cable you will still need to hook that cable up to the correct output on the 800XL. Another thing you could do maybe, is to verify that the composite video in works on your TV. If you have something else that has a composite video out, you could hook it up to test. Hate to see anyone spend money on a converter if the TV already has internal converting. Whatever you decide to do. Good luck. invisible kid
I might be repeating info already said, but this is what I would do: 1. plug atari 800xl into outlet, turn on, confirm red light on lower right keyboard is on, leave the 800xl on throughout the procedure 2. plug video cable into the atari 800xl 3. turn on tv, and find where in the menu you can select where the input is coming from, look for "composite" maybe 4. it will probably say "no signal" or something similar, which is correct, as we haven't plugged the video cable into the tv yet 5. one by one, plug each of the three cables into the yellow colored port in the area marked 8 in your tv documentation, looking to see if the tv displays anything 6. if you are still getting a black screen, it could be that the cable is bad, the tv source isn't selected correctly, or a few other things 7. if you are getting video, do the same thing with the remaining 2 cables, into the left audio input on your tv, pressing keys on the keyboard 8. if it is the right connection you should hear 'clicks' when you press the keys, make sure the volume is about 30% - 50% 9. good luck, once you get it, it can be a lot of fun playing around with this stuff

That's why I presented the meter method.
flashjazzcat
Did anyone yet have recourse to the manufacturer's website? http://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/atari-8bit-800xl-65xe-130xe-800xlf-1400xl-1450xld-1200xl-composite-video-av-tv-lead-cable.html "Technical Info" states that audio is supplied to the left and right speakers, and unless the manufacturer is deliberately trying to confuse us, L/R audio will be on the white/red connectors, and composite video on the yellow one. This will almost certainly match the colour coding on the back of the set. Edited February 22, 2015 by flashjazzcat
Marius
And you also don't get audio (no screen image, no audio)?
AtariGeezer
Here's another thought, is the TV's input selected to the correct format that matches the 800XL (NTSC / PAL) or AUTO? I received my 800XE yesterday and had to switch the input (on the TV's Option -> Color System Menu) to Auto since the PAL options didn't display properly.... Kyle22
Also, if you plug the video signal into the audio input, it should produce a humming / buzzing noise from the speakers. It won't hurt anything, and you can use this method to identify which cable end plug is which.
