Questions about some games.

I have also been looking for good real time stratrgy games to play on my 1020stfm. Any suggestions? I am a fan of Age of Empires and would enjoy something similar. The following games look fun, but I cannot find dumps. Any help finding them would be appreciated.

While downloading games from Atarimania, I noticed that most of the files are in .stx format. As I understand it, this is some sort of copyright protection for archived files. The only way I know to extract the files to a floppy is with Steem and Pasti. Is there an easier way to achive this? I use the floppies on my 1040stfm. Another issue is that half of the games I download from Atarimania cannot be viewed/extracted with Steem, but are playable. Is this part of the copyright protection?

To the best of my knowledge, there is no RTS for the ST. Most of the games you are looking at are turn based. However, being a fan of the RTS genre, I can suggest Rampart as a fun game to play.

 

Yes, the copy protection is what stops you from doing whatever you want with the STX. I would check the Automation/D-Bug, Vectronix etc back catalog for games that have the protection removed.

Cohort I and II might be a good one for you; a bit slow though (vaguely RTS), and Rorkes drift was along the same lines. It looks suspiciously like Conquest of Japan, and I think they are by the same company so probably based around the same engine. Populous and other god games like Caesar might also be worth a punt (this can be used in tandem with Cohort II, which was quite cool).

 

At least some of those games were shareware/ pd/ license ware, so you probably want to track down one of those PD library CD images which will have at least restricted versions of them on. There was a demo of Biohazard on an ST Format coverdisk, it is a bit like Captive or Xenomorph from what I remember. Good game.

 

That Dark Sat game looks quite interesting, not seen that one before..

A few that might count as real-time strategy: Populous 1 and 2, Powermonger, Supremacy. Similar games to Dark Side are Mercenary 1 & 2 (Second City) and Damocles. You also might like action/strategy games such as Carrier Command, Midwinter, Archipelagos, North & South (the battles anyway).

 

I believe .STX is a way of storing a disk's format more precisely than .ST etc., so the non-standard messed-up disk formats of some copy protected disks can be ripped in .STX format without needing to first crack the copy protection.
