Atarimax 32-in-1 OS in a 600XL?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone installed this module in a 600XL?

Steve has docs for 800XL and 1200XL, but no 600XL. Looking for suitable connecting points for the red, black, white harness wires. A pic would be great!

I did 800XL but that was years ago and since removed for U1Meg to take it's place.

It shouldn't be to hard to work out the equivalents for 600XL, probably go from schematics.

From memory the wires correspond to D-Data, R-Reset, S-Select. Data uses bit 7 of PIA PortB, self-test select doubles as the means to communicate with the PIC.

Select line allows the PIC to know if the user holds Select when powering on or pressing Reset (calls menu)

Reset allows the PIC to be able to reset the Atari (when new OS is selected)

I know it can be done, because I asked Steven in an e-mail and he told me I could send mine in. He said he'd do it for the same price as the 800XL, it was just a little trickier and that he didn't have instructions handy for posting to the site.

I never ended up getting it done. Maybe some day...

I got an answer from Steve at Atarimax, and completed the installation of the 32-in-1 in the 600XL. Here are the connections from the 4-pin header

Red wire connects to U14 Pin 3 (74LS14) (if your colors are different, this is the connection next to the asterisk (*) stenciled on the 32-in-1 pcb.)

Black wire connects to U17 Pin 13 (GTIA)

White wire connects to U21 Pin 17 (PIA)

In this 600XL I have a Mega-Hz 512K SRAM expansion, a KJMann S-Video mod, and the 32-in-1. I did have to swap out the original cpu for another one from a late-model 800XL board. With the IDE+2 the XL was stable as-is, but with the Black Box attached, I got spurious characters randomly appearing on the screen. With the new cpu, it is very stable. The video is the cleanest I've ever seen on any Atari that I've used. It is exceptional.
