SMS controller thumbstick?

Recommended Posts

If I remember correctly, they only came with the controllers and weren't sold separately. The controllers were later changed to no longer have the screw hole for the joystick.

I got my first SMS, a 3D bundle with the light gun, 3D glasses, and Missile Defense 3D. The controllers had a cover hiding the screw hole but I never saw any screw in thumbstick. I didn't even know it was an option back then until I noticed much later on the internet that there were a few variations of SMS controllers, early one with plug cover, later one with fake bump, and much later that was all flat.

Of course they had it, it's not a myth. :) My SMS that I got in April, 1987 has them. You can unscrew the joystick and pop in a cover. The joysticks were lost a lot (not to mention rarely used), and they were discontinued shorty after.

I didn't even know there were so many variations.

Yes, I have a SMS, gun, glasses as well from that bundle, and it's controller has the thumbstick cover. Another spare I have is missing the controller, and I'm awaiting a replacement from ebay (Germany) that never had the screw hole at all. I never realized the thumbsticks were available or I'd have been looking for them.

Got my SMS in 1986 and both controllers had the thumbsticks. I actually preferred the thumbstick on some games. I did end up loosing them both. Once most of my friends ended up getting NES's in late '87 they would take the sticks off the controllers when they came over to play because the got use to the NES pads.

I think I still have my two. I don't use them though because I find them annoying for most games. I'll try and see if I can dig them out.

The thumbsticks that came with my original SMS back then quickly broke, which is one reason why I suspect they are rare. They were 100% plastic and broke at the base where they threaded into the pad.

My solution was to go to the hardware store, find machine screws that matched the thread and overall length, then put a piece of plastic on the head of the screw to make it more comfortable. It wasn't pretty but it worked without breaking like the originals.

If I were make something similar today, I would do the same thing with a machine screw except use a painted wood dowel drilled through the center to cover the screw, also making it prettier and more comfortable.

Do the thumbsticks that came with Gravis Gamepads fit the SMS controller?

Is the thumbstick on the right side a from a Gravis Gamepad? If so, yes, it threads in perfectly.

I could never use those things [Gravis thumbsticks]... and I tried too, 'cause I have a habit of doing something different just for the sake of being different...

I tried laying the controller flat on the desk with my left index and thumb manipulating the stick with my right index and middle finger pressing buttons... no go.

I tried holding it like a modern game pad, using my right thumb for the buttons and my left thumb on the tip-top of the stick... no go.

Looking back I find it kind of strange, because I have no problems using thumbsticks on modern gamepads or the analog stick on the N64 controllers, which is very similar to the Gravis gamepad's joystick/thumbstick.

My friend's little brother was wiz at using the Gravis' thumbstick, and it always amazed me. I miss my old Gravis gamepads... wonder how much they are on eBay these days...

The one on the left is an official SMS thumbstick??? Wow, never seen one before and I had always assumed it was the same as a Gravis thumbstick... long and skinny... that one looks... weird... too small... but I'd like to try it.

ANYthing would have to be an improvement over the plain D-Pad of the stock SMS controller. Loves me some SMS - Hates me some SMS D-pads.

*Oh, and no... at least not like any Gravis Gamepad thumbstick I ever seen.

Doesn't the atrocious Philips CDI have a thumbstick like that?

Most of the SMS controllers with thumbsticks are going to cost you pretty hard from what I've seen on eBay. Personally I just stick with the master system controller or just use a Sega Genesis controller.

I have one of those mini-sticks on the right, I know mine came with one of those generic "Power Player" Sega Genesis Turbo pads.

I've thought about using a ball link rc plane part (the little black part on the left) before but just never followed through. It's got a nut, with a drill that could be added to any d pad, but I kind of figured the metal would be uncomfortable.
