APE (or AspeQt) and write with verify?

Recommended Posts

Perhaps someone here knows the answer to this:

Does APE automatically do a write with verify when writing to an image? Seems like it probably would since the PC system is so incredibly fast. But if not, does it respond to the write with verify SIO command, or just ignore it? I'm asking this because I have an Atari hard drive to APE backup program, and the time required for a backup doesn't seem to change more than a few seconds whether I use $50 or $57 for the write commands.

Or perhaps verify is something embedded deep in Windows or even the HD hardware? (Nothing to do with delayed writes -- just Windows may (or not) verify everything it has written to a HD.)

I would think not. I and most people I knew didn't bother with it even on the old 810s.

Like you said, it'd be troublesome under Windows anyway since most drives will have caching active which makes the command hard to implement properly.

Modern drives are reliable to the point of it not being needed anyway. If you do have a troublesome drive, losing a bit of Atari stuff will be the least of your worries.

Effectively the emulation would likely use the exact same codepath as for standard write. If you were doing "real" emulation in that you wanted to emulate the time lag, then you'd probably add some extra time for simulated readback.
