Atari 2600 Graduate Computer Benchmarked (& Others)

Recommended Posts

(not april fools,) I bought an old compute gazette article off of ebay, and have scanned it in for all to enjoy. This artice has a basic program that the autor (David H. Ahl,) wrote to benchmark pcs, as well as the results he got on several platforms (some, platforms that never existed, like the 2600 graduate, and the Vectrex computer module.)

Really interesting stuff to a geek like me, so I thought I'd share.

I was surprised at how slow Atari800 was  I thought that I saw a benchmark by Compute! that showed different results :? I wonder if the display had been disabled when running that one?

It's not the hardware that is to blame, it's the firmware. The Atari's floating point ROM routines are very poor and as far as I know they were never patched with latter versions of the system, but there are 3rd party alternatives out there.

Try it on the Atari 800 with Turbo Basic. I bet the result will look better..

Not necessarily, if they haven't also replaced the floating point routines.

Maybe someone has fun testing that?
