Sound lists for the TI ISR, XB Player, and Spectra2: taking requests

Recommended Posts

I started out doing music and sound effects for 4Anoid and have come to enjoy the process. It is rather arduous since the tool I am using is not really designed for how I am using it, but I am also working on a few Perl scripts to do things like combine lists, delete and move channels, change tempos and attenuation, extract channels, etc., which will make my work a bit easier.

So far I have done music for Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Arkanoid, Trolls and Tribulations, Ms. Pac-Man, and Ballblazer, as well as some I have not made public. Some more complete than others. I like to think I do a fairly reasonable job. At this point I thought I would throw my hat in and take requests. So long as I can find some base-line music in some form or another I should be able to complete the task. It can take me up to a week or more as I do these in my spare time. I am still getting the hang of sound effects, so go easy on me there.

Of course, you could use a conversion tool (the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Tursi's,) but I am doing these from hand and make use of the native capabilities of the list players. Meaning these lists will play with the built-in list player, or using compatible players (I will do up a list of these players later) available here on AA. The only problem which may arise is the length of some of the lists (Trolls and Tribulations and Ghosts 'n' Goblins, in particular, are 2k or better in length.)

So, anyone have anything in particular you would like me to tackle?

Gyruss... you bastards ;)

You got it. I will have to look up Kung-Fu Master, I have never heard of it. Could be fun as I will not be going into that one with any prejudice. Pengo I remember playing, but I do not remember any particular music.

I will start working on these this weekend.

EDIT: DOH!! Pengo's music is Popcorn. Neat!

Oh yeah, one more: Monty on the run ;)

If you make the music I will make the game.

Deal. I have been considering this one.

EDIT: I would actually consider this quite an accomplishment if I can come close to the quality of Rob Hubbard -- he is a fricken' legend.

Heck, since you mention Hubbard, how about two more challenges:

Commando in all its glory:

or for a second pick, Shockway Rider:

These would certainly give you something to chew on ;) oh, and 60hz speed please ;)

Or you could just go through the High Voltage SID collection and through random ones at me ;)

I can tell you this right off: sounds which use triplet chords are going to be expensive. I have to experiment a little as I have not yet been overly satisfied with the results of my hand-rolled chords. I am probably doing something wrong :)

The COMMANDO tune has been done for the colecovision by Daniel Bienvenue. If sounds mighty impressive.

If someone comes up with a colecovision to TI-99/4A coverter you should be ready to roll, having (nearly) the same sound chip.

There is source code and early bit of the work right here on AA:

A YouTube video of the commando music points to a blog with source and other files that is no longer around. This site has some neat stuff in the multimedia/music area.

Here's something I did a few years back. I played Gyruss on the colecovision MEKA emulator, recorded the audio and used the MOD2PSG2 tracker and Tursi's EPSGMODPLAYER to create a TI-99/4A version.

Tune speed is not correct, but you get the idea.

You can run it with Editor Assembler EA#5 -> DSK1.#GYRUSS

Hi retroclouds,

as "gyruss.zip" is no DSK, who can I start it with the E/A ?

Unpack the ZIP ?

Thanks for an answer.

Oh dear, now he may get a Partial Eclipse of the Heart. :-D

(For the rest of you outside Europe, we had a nice partial eclipse yesterday; SoFi = nickname for "Sonnenfinsternis" = eclipse)

Here's the youtube video of the colecovision commando conversion

I managed to pull up the MP3s from NewColecoVision. His rendition of Commando is really good and will be difficult to top but I have some flair I want to impose.

I have been listening to Monty on the Run last night, and even dreamed (literally) up a new player to implement which I will, appropriately, call the "Monty Player." The music is almost six minutes long and some of the sequences repeat so it would be perfect for a tracker-type of construction. Not certain I am going to build a new player right away as my goal is to get the music done as soon as possible; I will probably leverage my Perl script, first.

Well, that and since I discovered the music for Pengo is one of my favorites, I will probably be bouncing back-and-forth.

Well, only part of the music. There is still the high score music and sound effects :)

I am focused on Monty on the Run right now. It is a doozey. While I am working on it I am also having to work on some tools. I will eventually produce a special player designed to attack songs like this at little more easily. The percussion line is repeating throughout the song, the bass line repeats a lot with various parts following the melody. The percussion line conflicts with the bass line, which is a problem for contention over the noise channel, but I think I can cheat it like I did with Ballblazer. There are a ton of warbles and sweeps which are extremely expensive in an ISR sound list. Oh, and it is five minutes and 47 seconds long.

I expect this sound list to consume at least a full 8k bank as an ISR sound list. If I complete the player at the same time, I can break it into smaller parts which can be expanded into and played from a much smaller buffer.

Whoopie! Anyway, this is going to take the better part of a couple of months in my spare time.

Hi, how did you get that to .DSK ?

Is there a way to convert/save that, or did you just have the DSK-File in addition ?

I probably shouldn't presume to answer for Filip and Michael—but,

  1. Unzip the file to get the 3 files out.
  2. Create a blank DSK image with Michael's TI-ImageTool or Fred's TI99Dir.
  3. With the same program used in (2), copy the 3 unzipped files to the DSK image.
