Stick-Shiply #1 Posted March 27, 2015 So last night I was playing my colecovision, specifically using the module 1 to play some atari. This morning I go to flip it on again and all I get are black and white bars running up the screen. Nothings has touched the Colecovision since I last played it. No spills, drops, bumps. No pets to have done anything to it. So I'm very confused. I tried it on two TVs (both have previously played it just fine. My old CRT makes the black and white bars while my other new flatscreen doesnt even register the signal. I've tried two different wires and two different F connectors and nothing works.. Anyone have any ideas?
NIAD #2 Posted March 27, 2015 Is the Atari adapter still plugged-in? If so, unplug it and test using a ColecoVision game and report back.
Stick-Shiply #3 Posted March 27, 2015 Yeah, I already tried it with and without the module, same issue on both TVs wires
Nebulon #4 Posted March 27, 2015 Have you tried unplugging and re-plugging in the power connection to the ColecoVision?
Stick-Shiply #5 Posted March 27, 2015 yup, gave that a shot already too
NIAD #6 Posted March 27, 2015 Sounds like either a Power Switch (the on/off switch) problem or the Power Supply itself... probably the Power Switch. The power switch will have to be desoldered from the system, cleaned and repacked with dielectric grease and then soldered back onto the CV PCB. This is the only sure fire way to fix this issue as the quick fix of spraying it with contact cleaner only last a short time. You can try the contact cleaner fix to see the results though and if the system works after, you know 100% what the issue is. When using the Atari adapter, the only thing used on the CV console is the power and RF output... everything else is bypassed. So seeing as you are having this issue with the Atari adapter attached, it really helps to zero in on it. BTW, do you leave your system plugged in at all times. If so, I would get in the habit of unplugging it when not in use.
Stick-Shiply #7 Posted March 28, 2015 Thanks for the info, but um..I'm not a tech savvy person really, would you know any good tutorials for such a project? Also what would I try spraying with the contact cleaner? And thanks, I'll be sure to leave the system unplugged from now on if I manage to get it going again
NIAD #8 Posted March 28, 2015 Here is a thread on DIY repairs: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/163446-diy-modifications-for-colecovision/ you have to open up the CV to get at the power on/off switch. What has more than likely happened is the dielectric grease (can be bought at any auto store) has completely dried up and this is why the switch is failing. Well, that is if it is the switch and not the power supply, but I think it's the switch. If you don't feel comfortable working on the system, you should send Yurkie a PM as he offers repairs as well as modifications.
coleconut #9 Posted March 28, 2015 Jiggle power switch when its 'on' Try channel 3-4 switch a few times. Jiggle wire at the rf connector end. Try a different cable. Using a coax adaptor? Got a spare? Results of those tests will help narrow down issue.
