Space War for Atari ST

Recommended Posts

Retro Battlestations on Reddit had a Basic programming challenge to port Space War from an HP Basic to another retro platform. Someone beat me to the Atari 8-Bit port so I ported it to GFA Basic for the Atari ST. You can get and view the source on my Space War for Atari ST page. This is my first GFA Basic program and I'm certain there are improvements that can be made.

Congratulations! Sounds like you have had some accomplishments with game development already, but now you get the distinction of having posted the first topic in AtariAge's new "Atari ST/TT/Falcon Programming" forum!

I want to play this! I loved Space Wars in the arcade. The cabinet had such a cool look and I loved slingshotting around the sun (or dark sun if you chose that option).

Thanks for added to the homebrew community.

I'm also glad we have a specific forum for ST/TT/Falcon programming.

Sadly this is not the same game. Only the "rockets" move in this game and are affected by the star's gravity. You enter launch angle and initial velocity. The math in this game could be used to make a real Spacewars clone.

Well, let's not say, "sadly" just yet. It might be pretty fun to play. Let's just say the naming is "unfortunate" since people will think it's a remake of the of the original.

From your explanation, it sounds like a mortar game...in space. Maybe a better name for the game would be, "Curved Space".

Yes, it is similar to the mortar and gorilla games but in space. When I read about the challenge I also thought it was a clone of the original Spacewar game.

20 years ago, I made a Space War clone in GFABASIC with ship movement but it lacked correct physics. It was my first remake for publication, see http://paradize.final-memory.org/games.shtml -> Space Battle

If someone want to cut his teeth, I have the base source from 1994/95 somewhere without fancy graphics, men, sound or joystick options. But it was the basic elements without correct physics.

Take the attached source without warranties as a little Easter gift for upcoming Atari coders.

Take care and have a Happy Easter!
