Does JiffyDOS make third-party drives GEOS-compatible?

Recommended Posts

JiffyDOS-enabled Commodore disk drives (1541, 1571) will boot GEOS with no problems. Many third-party drives, like the MSD and Enhancer 2000, will not boot GEOS. But, does JiffyDOS allow these drives to boot GEOS?

That's a good question. I personally don't use GEOS, but I know the original disks were copy protected to only work on the 1541/1571. The copy protection has been defeated if I'm not mistaken, so maybe one of those disks would work on those 3rd party drives.

For the Enhancer 2000 at least, I'd think not. What a crap drive, I actually threw one of them out :P

Shame. When we ran BBSs we absolutely LOVED the Enhancer 2000. I have two, a tan and a white one. These are far faster than the 1541 for most activities, but in particular dealing with RELative files (user, message, and file databases especially.) We changed out a 1541 for an Enhancer 2000 on a Color 64 BBS and logins were near instantaneous.

Yeah, I have seen plenty of bootable GEOS copies out there, so I suspect one of those might work. I can tell you the copy I made with Kracker Jax would not boot on the Enhancer. Fortunately Gunship boots just fine, and Epyx FastLoad and Access Warp Speed all work perfectly.

Yes for specific file level use I could see there being an advantage. As a gamer the thing just drove me nuts even compared with the regular 1541 type of issues.
