NANOPEB-F18 V1 - what CF card would you recommend to use?

Hi all

 

As the title says, what CF Card would you recommend to use with your nanopeb?

 

I purchased a Kingston 4GB CF Card, and the nanopeb appears to have issues reading from it.

 

I can load DSKs using both TiDIR and xvm99 (part of the xdt99 cross assembler tools). Everything looks sweet at this stage.

 

I've got my 5V adapter plugged in. TI powers up fine with "NANOPEB-F18 V1" on the splash screen.

 

I can go into TI Basic, and type CALL MOUNT(1,1) & it works without Error.

However if I try any of my known techniques of accessing any of the DSKs on the CF Card, nothing works.

i.e ('WALL' being a file contained within DSK1 loaded to Volume 1)

Or using Mini Memory 'LOAD AND RUN' (as I would on js99er & classic99). I can see the middle CF card accessing LED lighting up.

From reading about the nanopeb, it can be real picky about what CF cards work.

Reckon I should try a Sandisk 4Gb? Or 4GB too large for this nanopeb?

I had a SANDISK 512Meg card that worked fantastically. I also had an off brand one that was 1G (IIRC) and it worked well for 6 months or so, then stopped working with the CF7. Still worked in my all in one reader on the PC, but the CF7 refused to read it after that.

 

SANDISK for sure, at least from my experience.

 

Is the CF card properly formatted and all? It has been a while, but I thought the CF7 and nano required a particular formatting function from BASIC before loading it with disk images. I might be wrong. As I said, I haven't used my CF7 in a few years, as it no longer functions properly.

Personally I've always had more luck with smaller cards. Been using a 32*MB* card for years with no problems. Have multi-*GB* cards that work fine on the PC but not the nanopeb. Small cards still available cheap on eBay.

I have a 2GB Apacer CF for my nanoPEB. That was how my nanoPEB was equipped. The only problem I recall ever having was using TI99Dir to copy DSK images that were not 400kB (1600 sectors). What I had to do in TI99Dir was to

1. Create a blank 400kB image,
2. Copy files from the image I wanted (usually 90kB, 180kB, 360kB or 720kB) to the new 400kB image and
3. Copy new 400kB image to the CF.

Of course, the above procedure will not work with TI Forth or any other system that uses direct-sector access or its own file system, such as UCSD Pascal.

if I remember right, maximum for FAT is 4 GB. So, this should work in general (getting 2GB free space for the nanoPEB)

What I do, and what works good, is the following:

 

- format the CF-Card with FAT on your PC.

- eject the card (with the windows-function)

- pull it out and re-insert it

- start TI99DIR from Fred Kaal, and access the card once from the menue (->Files ->Read CF7+)

- it should ask you to format that card (TI-Format-like), say "Yes"

 

Then just copy your volumes with CF2DSK a.s.o to your CF-Card.

Maybe, in this sequence that works (better)

 

You can also use my small Batch-Tool here to do that in an easy way, just place it (and the PrintF.exe) into the ..\CF2K-Folder.

(Please read the small instruction inside the batch for a better organizing your DSKs/Volumes)

 

With this batch, you can also copy your volumes in one step from the CF-Card doen to your harddisk,

by AUTOMATICALLY giving clear numbers AND names to that files

(the names are taken OUT of the CF-volumes, they are the TI-Disks-Names :)

 

Also, if you have this big collections from usergroups, enumerated .DSKs only,

just place them into a folder below the CF2K-folder (i.e. MYDISKS.tralala),

the start the batch with the option CF (=DSK2CF), to copy them TO the CF-Card.

The just start the batch once again, with the option DSK (=CF2DSK),

(a target-folder on your harddisk is created automatically below CF2K, with date and time it it, so nothing can happen!)

and ZACK you have all DSKs back, with a cool enumeration and the given TI-Disknames

 

I will go further with the batch later, just to rename this DSK-Collections without the step needed at the moment,

to copy it first TO the CF, and then back to the HDD.

Here are also some empty disk in most common formats, if you need.

They are also good for the HxC-drive´s small display.

(I´ve taken them from here, AA, a buddy made and provided them (big thanks)

I´ve just mass-renamed them for clearer names and pathes)

 

PS to the batch:

 

the folder ..\CF2K\MYDSKS is the standard-folder for the batch to copy FROM HDD TO CF2.

(if you don´t change it in the dialog at startup)

So, I have this as my "productive" folder, where organize my "original" DSKs/volumes

Thanks so much everyone! Have given all these suggestions for my current card a go, and it looks like it may be incompatible.

 

Have purchased a couple of 32MB Sandisk cards from ebay, so will report back when they arrive.

 

Will go through all these great suggestions again.

don´t forget, if you want to take it out of the PC´s cardreader, to use the windows "eject"-funtion (every time!)

What schmitzi said, and definitely "full"-format, if TI disks were on it.

And the windows "eject"-funtion is also very important. I had several time no data on the CF. It was probably because of that.

Hey everyone!

 

My 32MB Sandisk CF Cards arrived on Friday.

 

Followed process of formatting in TiDir, copying dsk images over etc. Plugged in to nanopeb....

 

WORKED FIRST TIME! WOOO!

 

So cool seeing my Thrust game I'm porting working on a real machine!

(TI DIR everything okay, but I do not even get the NanoPEB screen at all, everything is blank)

As my 256 Mb went corrupted (maybe because of taking it out everytime to connect to the PC to upload a new volume)

as my RS232 still does not work...

 

Then the image is easy to put it back to the normal state (e.g. with 300+ disks loaded :-)
