BillyHW #1 Posted April 6, 2015 There's a new port of the classic 8-bit computer game Bruce Lee for the SMS. It looks great. There are some changes in the controls and AI, but otherwise a decent port. It's also a bit easier, and definitely looks and feels like a Sega Master System game rather than an 8-bit computer game. The sound doesn't use the FM chip, and so is also inferior to the C64 and A8 in sound. Check it out: http://www.smspower.org/Homebrew/BruceLee-SMS I played it for a couple hours tonight and managed to finish it with save states:
Rybags #2 Posted April 6, 2015 (edited) Only a short way in. To begin with these SMS emulators are a total PITA. Finally get Meka to stop going into fullscreen mode only to find it only has a pathetic 2x expand mode when windowed. So, change to Fusion. Runs windowed, but then you use Alt as a joykey and it initiates the windows pulldown menu. The game... the fighting dynamic is all wrong. They're just fullspeed and it's not how it's supposed to be. Stick up doesn't jump. As annoying as having to use joystick directions for such functions is, that's how Bruce Lee is on Atari and C64 so you should be able to have it that way on SMS. The graphics are pretty, but the gameplay seems to be not how I remember. Proper Bruce Lee is mostly about the strategy with the enemies thrown in to slow you down. It feels like this one is about continually swatting the enemies away, with the strategy/puzzles thrown in to slow you down. It also seems way to easy to get totally stiffed - climing up a trellis, the green guy just comes over and kicks the crap out of you. In the proper game, getting kicked will usually propel you away from the enemy so he can't just keep pounding you. I just hope they don't consider this a finished product, there's still plenty of work to be done, and that's with the fighting and movement mechanics. BillyHW #3 Posted April 6, 2015 Yeah, I agree that the fighting mechanics are a bit off. The speed is a bit slower too. But it's still Bruce Lee for me. I do prefer the C64 versions though.
Rybags #4 Posted April 6, 2015 It also desperately needs a way to turn that music off.
BillyHW #5 Posted April 6, 2015 It also desperately needs a way to turn that music off. I wouldn't mind it if it was better music.
UberArcade #6 Posted April 6, 2015 This looks really good. I loved Bruce Lee on the C64. I hope somebody releases it on cart.
+GoldenWheels #7 Posted April 6, 2015 Loved this game on my neighbor's C64. Graphics here look very nice.
Lost Dragon #8 Posted April 6, 2015 This looks superb!. My eyes lit up when i saw what they'd done with the visuals, but then my heart sank when i read Rybags, talking about how they'd totally screwed up the gameplay :-( This is what i hate about remakes-it's simply not enough to 'tart-up' the visuals and audio, if you don't retain the essential 'essence' that made the originals so great, so much fun to play you ended up buying and replaying again when you moved systems (like i did from the 800XL to the C64), what's the bally point in doing them?. Sounding like a bit of a missed opp.here, crying shame if so....
