Schmagen
Hi all, I am looking to see if someone knows which Heavy Sixer is more rare or valuable, a Heavy Sixer manufactured in Sunnyvale, CA or a Heavy Sixer manufactured in Taiwan. Thanks in advance for any input you have on this topic. Keith
kennybrooks
I would believe the USA to be more valuable as it should be older, but I may be mistaken.
Schmagen
Thanks kennybrooks, Per this link: http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/consoles.html they describe the first year the Atari 2600 Heavy Sixer that came out in 1977. They say the following: This is the original 1977 Atari Video Computer System, and this particular design was only produced for one year. Because it features six chrome-like switches and has heavy internal RF Shielding, some collectors refer to this as a "Heavy Sixer". At first glance it looks just like the CX2600 that follows in 1978, but it is noticably heavier when compared, and has some extra plastic molding around the back and sides of the unit. These units were manufactured in Sunnyvale, California, and there is a tag on the underside from the manufacturing plant to indicate this. There is also a serial number on the unit itself with a matching serial number sticker on the box. The later model was manufactured in Hong Kong. Thus, why I am asking about which Heavy Sixer is more rare or valuable, a Heavy Sixer manufactured in Sunnyvale, CA or a Heavy Sixer manufactured in Taiwan, is because I have a chance to buy a Heavy Sixer made in Taiwan, and I want to see if it is more valuable than a Heavy Sixer manufactured in Sunnyvale, CA. Thanks! Keith
Schmagen
Hi again, Here is the link: http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/consoles.html
chas10e
not sure which is more "valuable" ...but like anything it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I got my Taiwan H6 in box exept the inserts that I think may have gotten tossed by Goodwill it did have correct AC adapter & cx-10 joysticks but missing paddles with Atari logo the box did NOT have the chess piece either. all that it was between $75 & $100 & discovered it still needed a bit of work posted pics here http://atariage.com/forums/topic/186498-the-official-atari-2600-heavy-6-switch-list/?p=3070680
Nutsy Doodleheimer
I would think the Heavy Sixer manufactured in Taiwan is more rare. They made them there in July and August 1978. That is the tail end of the run before they started producing Light Sixers. Also Taiwan Heavies have the channel select switch as true Sunnyvale models don't feature it. ZXSpectrum128
Just adding a bit of geography here... Hong Kong is not located in Taiwan. Hong Kong is a formerly British colony and was handed over to China some years back. Hong Kong is located in the south-east of China and almost an island. Taiwan is an island located east of China. IIRC opponents of Mao fled to this island and established a democracy there. China never accepted Taiwan as a separate nation and wants it back in their Reich.
