The Official Turbografx 16 Thread!

The PCE Mini arrived a day early yesterday, surprisingly a bit smaller yet over the already cd sized original.  Amazing little system, works great.  The variety on it is quite good, nice to use with dozens of games to mess with, enough to keep busy when the need arises.  Very long cord on the controller too so it works in here well.

That it is, thankfully despite them foolishly not releasing it themselves in the US, it did hit the Genesis as Mega Bomberman.

Oh it's the same game? I have Mega Bomberman... any differences with it compared to Bomberman '94.

Another one I really enjoyed playing was Saturn Bomberman.

To be honest I don't know, but google would answer it fast I"m certain... bomberman fans are plenty.  I had the game for a time, both, but not side by side to compare them.  I just know it's ported to Genesis for more market penetration, but I don't know if it was tweaked/fixed in some ways or straight copied.

I'm sure you can find comparison videos if you search, but basically the Genesis port is missing colors/detail, level animations, and screen FX. It's a pretty shotty port to the Genesis:

That sounds like the Genesis, as militant as they got over how Nintendo outdid them in visuals and audio with their Nintendon't scammin' they should have felt threatened by the PCE, an older system that did stuff better too.  But as long as the gameplay mechanics are intact, it's more than good enough as it was the only way to play outside of the PC Engine import market.

I don't think there's anything here in the game that couldn't easily be done on the Genesis (doesn't explain missing animation and missing details). I mean yeah less colors, but not to what this port has hahah. It really is a fast and dirty port.

Yeah NEC USA was utterly and completely incompetent.  Eventually they gave in and the distributor that picked it up TTi/TZD(Turbo Zone Direct) handled stuff notably better, but it was too much too late to do really any good but hold off death.  I ordered my Duo through TZD in the day and numerous games that would go on to get ugly expensive from the US/JP library because of the idiots of the parent company.  SO much good stuff could have happened with HuCards but TZD seemed more about the discs since they weren't an issue to get out compared, cheap media, cheap storage and distribution.

Bomberman 94 is vastly superior to Mega Bomberman.

Yep, just look at the ports of Air Buster. Mega Bomberman just wasn't done right.

I presume they gave up trying to release more on the TG at that point. I’. glad the other two got released in the US though.

Well if you had a Wii they put Bomberman 94 on the Wiishop for the US side officially.

I really wished the PC-Engine had come out in Europe (especially around '88/89). While I'm not a fan of a lot of the Euro games of that era, I DO love how they had exceptional coding skills and tried to push console limits (and computers).

They could have re-shelled the system and added a larger cart port (for dip mask roms on traditional carts to save cost), and with the incredible backplane bus.. it literally has everything you need to upgrade it to a small home computer system.

Yes, they kicked Doraemon and friends out and replaced them with the arcade characters when it came to the US. The Doraemon version is a lot easier to find last I checked, though Cratermaze is still pretty affordable. It’s not in the top tier of maze action puzzlers, but it’s in the next tier. I like it lots.

There was a lot of discussion about using the SSDS3 with a TG16 even outside of the Terraonion forums.  I can't remember which, but the tight TG16 fit is mentioned either in the My Life In Gaming or Game Sack video covering the original SSDS3—even going so far as to show how the SSDS3 dug into the plastic of the TG16 they were using.

I have an earlier SSDS3 bought from Stone Age Gamer and use it with a US TG16. It fits fine on the TG16 when I loosen the SSDS3 case screws.

It's also very durable.  When I first got it and plugged it in, it just would not work.  Spent days plugging it in and out, checking the contact pins, and turning the TG16 off and on.  Turns out the SAG sticker threw me off and I was attaching it upside down to the TG16.  Flipped it over and both the SSDS# anf TG16 have been working fine sice.
