AtarinDave #1 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) Hey, guys, Atarindave here. I know I haven't posted anything in a while, but I just got Wolfenstein 3D for the 3DO. Then it hit me, I watched a bunch of comparison videos for this game, I want your guys' opinion. 3DO Jaguar Mac DOS GBA SNES I listed these consoles by my opinion, 3DO and Jaguar rule!!! But yes, which one is the best format for this game? You decide in the comments! Also pick your favorite version of Doom if you'd like. NeoGeoNinja #2 Posted April 17, 2015 Out of the options you listed, I have only ever played the non-PC versions (never owned a PC back then). My favourite out of the 4 is the Jaguar version. I realise it doesn't have the stealth element from the other versions, but even so, I much prefer the feel of the Jaguar version and think, overall, it plays better than the original on 3DO. Rick Dangerous #3 Posted April 17, 2015 The Jaguar version for me personally. I guess I just prefer the original PC midi music and otherwise it runs just as fast and as smooth.
AtarinDave #4 Posted April 17, 2015 The Atari Jaguar is an excellent version for the game. I'd put the Jag at a close second, the 3DO is just smoother, has better music and SFX, and the graphics are astonishing for a Wolfenstein game.
Goochman #5 Posted April 17, 2015 DOS - the Jag version would be tops if it didnt introduce the rocket launcher - made things a bit too easy IMHO.
sh3-rg #6 Posted April 17, 2015 the 3DO is just smoother Smoother than 60fps?
Willard #7 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) I prefer 3DO. The music is great and the aspect ratio remains wider in line with the PC version. I did a comparison once and from the captures I took (from a few of the exact same points in the game), the Jaguar version cropped the view to get the full screen. I also don't like how they kind of spliced the doom weapons into the Jaguar version and swapped out the score element and replaced it with more health opportunities. I'm a bit torn between the PC original with the characters that face different directions and the enhanced version that has higher res graphics. Have the original on XBLA and the enhanced on 3DO. Rjohnson71 #8 Posted April 25, 2015 I think that the Jaguar and 3DO versions of Wolfenstein 3D are the best. I find the PC version irritating. When you finish an episode, the game ends and you have to go to the trouble of restarting the game on the next episode. But on the Jaguar, 3DO, SNES and GBA versions, the game can be played all the way through without being interrupted. I have this game for the SNES and Jaguar. I used to have it for the 3DO but sadly, it got broke.
Rick Dangerous #9 Posted April 26, 2015 Guess its time I pick up the 3DO version...
btbfilms76 #10 Posted April 26, 2015 I love the overlays on the FPS! All the other consoles you had to cycle throughout the weapons - not with the Jaguar baby! I know the overlays turned people off but growing up with intellevision and colecovision the overlays made sense to me.
NearCry #11 Posted April 26, 2015 I just finished Doom on the Jaguar a few mins ago! Wolfenstein is next on my list.
NeoGeoNinja #12 Posted April 26, 2015 I love the overlays on the FPS! All the other consoles you had to cycle throughout the weapons - not with the Jaguar baby! Well. On the the Jaguar, it's still 'Select' to change cycle through the weapons on Wolf3D
Willard #13 Posted April 26, 2015 Well. On the the Jaguar, it's still 'Select' to change cycle through the weapons on Wolf3D for sure. controls overview overlay I also believe you cannot select the knife in the Jag version after you get a weapon, which probably would've been remedied had their been a keypad assignment for the weapons. Major Havoc 2049 #14 Posted April 26, 2015 (edited) The Jaguar version of Wolfenstein was cool because it added the flame thrower and rocket launcher. The higher resolution and full screen is nice as well. Jag Wolfenstein also has music from both Wolfenstein 3D and Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny. I'm not sure if any other version uses music from both games. Doesn't Jag Wolfenstein also use QSound stereo sound as well? The sound is pretty amazing and it sometimes sounds like the guards are shouting from behind you. The spinning globe with the id and Atari logos and pics of Blazkowitz and Hitler just seals the deal and makes it the best version. A port of the Spear of Destiny to the Jag would have been nice. I agree, love the music (especially the music at the second bunker, so groovy). And with extra weapons, it sure takes the game to a second level. Couldn't look better. Willard #16 Posted April 26, 2015 (edited) fwiw the 3DO also had the flamethrower and rocket launcher added too (that applies to the SNES .etc too). the 3DO also has an extra mission pack in addition to what you get with the Jaguar version. plus it has improved sound fx and a completely redone soundtrack with CD audio. i've been wanting to do some nicer comparisons of certain games like wolf3d and rayman but things just don't seem to find the time I've read there are other diffences like more detailed graphics in the 3DO version but that's a wikipedia source . Algus #17 Posted April 26, 2015 (edited) PC Version for both. Why you ask? Level editors. Holy shit were those fun to dick around with as a kid. I had a buddy who built his neighborhood in Doom. The first level was his house, it was pretty awesome. Edited April 26, 2015 by Algus
Austin #18 Posted April 26, 2015 If you are including the PC and Mac releases, then those are the best bar-none. There's no competition.
+madman #19 Posted April 27, 2015 I can't imagine anyone ever thinking the SNES version is the best.
CGQuarterly #20 Posted April 27, 2015 If you are including the PC and Mac releases, then those are the best bar-none. There's no competition. Exactly. The answer is DOS. Not even close. Never played the Mac version, but if it's the same then there you go.
AtarinDave #21 Posted April 27, 2015 (edited) The SNES version is still playable, and it's pretty fun. I don't think the SNES version is bad at all. However, I just played the SNES version, then the 3DO version, so I was just like "Holy crap.." 3DO definitely has better sound, Jaguar I think is the same as far as how the game runs. Question: Are you saying that the DOS or Mac version is the best because of the controls? Edited April 27, 2015 by AtarinDave

Rick Dangerous #23 Posted April 28, 2015 The SNES version of Wolfenstein is playable, but looks like a bowl of puke. I play my copy now and again just for giggles but i'd say even Doom on the snes looked/played better. Well this thread seems to have really driven 3DO Wolf 3D sales on ebay...there were 2-3 copies available a few weeks back and now there are 0. Guess i'll have to wait until the dust settles and this thread is buried a little further down
potatohead #24 Posted April 28, 2015 I like the Jag version. And DOOM. The family preferred consoles, and they played the crap out of it. For me personally, the PC version is the very best. I ran it on a 386/33 back in the day. And that early keyboard mouse experience just ruled. Same thing with DOOM, and that was my first multi-player experience too. A friend had setup the thing at university. We would come in the evenings, jump on some workstations and just play. Comparing older, slower PC's to the consoles is one thing. The experience is very comparable. But the controls are in the way on the consoles. Comparing it to a bit faster PC is another. Total twitch game! And that's why the PC rules for me. It's just awesome. One of my favorite moments was on the PC, and I had done some ugly battle, ending with me taking a breather in some narrow hall way or other. Had like 5 percent health and just the knife... but I was damn near finished with the level. So, after slamming a Pepsi, I went for it! Knifed my way right to the door, and got out, and got a health pack just in time! I remember dipping in, knife, knife, knife, move, knife, knife, knife, move.... did this little dance around the baddies, just barely avoiding being shot, and got 'em all in one flurry of thrashing! Keyboard mouse baby! That moment really wasn't possible on the consoles... Now, if that control scheme were available? Yeah! The console versions played well, and all that. Lots of fun, and plenty good technically. But having the controls on PC is what makes it for me.

Lots of fun, and plenty good technically. But having the controls on PC is what makes it for me. It's funny, but I never really liked the keyboard/mouse combo. I always used a Logitech gamepad for games like Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Stone, Doom, etc. Frankly, those types of games were well suited to the gamepad because you really didn't have to aim/target. With that said, GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64 worked well with the gamepad, and precision aiming (no doubt thanks to programmed assist) was relatively easy. Even today I tend to play FPS games more on consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 than on my PC. Old habits die hard I guess.
