Have a problem with controller buttons

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with my controller, as usual the flex, but in my case I tried to construct with push buttons an alternative keypad, the problem is that the console do nothing when I, for example, press start (put together the orange-white cable with the red-white one), I already:

-check the cables and colors.

-check the connection for each button and combinations.

-check continuity on each cable.

What can I do?? I can send pictures of that.

What do you mean travistouchdown? Do you think its a problem with mi console? Mine its a 4 port

Pretty sure he was joking... the 5200 controllers are notoriously unreliable.

Do you only have the one controller? It would help if you could rule out the console by trying a known working controller.

Another thing to consider is...

Some buttons aren't working because the wiring harness is actually faulty. It is very common for the thin wires inside the cable to deteriorate and cause problems to an otherwise perfect working controller.

New harness' can be bought, but they are NOS and are prone to the same problems. If only BRAND NEW ones were made by a factory in China somewhere. :)

I've built custom controllers from scratch. There is nothing special about the buttons. Just connect together the appropriate wires in the cable (pins in the port).

I have no idea whether the colors you cite represent the right conductors or not.

If I were in your shoes, I'd make some sort of jumpers that let me connect directly to the port pins and eliminate the possibility of broken wires in the original cable.

You could also disconnect your cable from the console and, with an ohmmeter or continuity tester, probe the pins that you think you're connecting together with your button and see if they're actually connecting when you press your new button. Maybe you got the pinout wrong?

BigO thanx a lot for your opinión.

It's weird... Believe it or not I already do all the things you said, have two controllers and checked continuity on both cables, nothing seems wrong, checked resistance and same thing, the next thing will do its check directly from the console, open it and see what happens. All the cable colors and combinations for the buttons are check triple.

The 5200 service manual indicates button resistance should be metering below 50K Ohms when testing a meter manually. If I get a reading significantly higher than this, and the flex circuit is clean and not damaged, then this indicates high resistance in the controller cable wires, and possible damage?
