Recommended Posts

Just curious if any of you like the old Infocom games? I have them all + an Emu to run them if anyone is interested...there are like 35 total games.

Enchanter was my fav...played that for many hours growing up on my Apple 2e

I remember them. Zork trilogy, Enchanter trilogy, Planetfall, Stationfall, Leather Goddesses, etc. I think I must have played them all. Where did you find it??

I have been stashing the roms for a while...finally got them all and found an emu that will play them...it's a small file, I can email it easy to anyone who wants it...

The emu opens upo like a dos window, but more spiffy than a regular dos window...lol....then you just play the games in that.

I also own 3 versions of legit Activision releases that cover all the games...so if there is anyone that wants to bitch about the emu & roms...you can kiss it...lol.

These are vintage - so should put anyones panties in a wad...

I played The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy emulated on Douglas Adam's website. I love text games. So if you can, please e-mail me the file. I have my e-mail in my profile

Yeah, I loved these games on my Atari 8bits. My favorites were Hitchhiker's Guide, Planetfall, and Cutthroats. Hitchhiker's was hilarious like the book, Planetfall was eerie exploring an deserted civilization, and Cutthroats was a challenging adventure.

It's amazing how involving these games were, and I still remember a lot of the plot lines 20 years later.

I find text adventure games like those published by Infocom, Scott Adams, et al. to be very difficult games to get into. Trying to get your character to do something by typing in commands can be a real chore in itself when you don't have a clue as what commands can be typed in to do something, which results in a lot of trial-and-error-and-no-fun. Sometimes you can get your character to move, but it will only be in the same few places that your character is allowed to go, which results in more trial-and-error-and-no-fun. Probably the only text adventure games I would find fun are the BASIC programming games of Creative Computing like Hunt The Wumpus, where the commands are simple and don't result in a lot of trial-and-error-and...you get the idea!

One of my KUALEST memories???

Borrowing my friends Vortrax(?????) voice recognition device for the C64, training it to know all the commands for ZORK (There aren't that many), and completing the game by voice!!!

Still remember that!!!!

(I used the walkthru to figure out what words to train, but I swear I didn't use it to play!!! I already had that down.. :-)

desiv

(Although Hitchhikers Guide was more fun(my Fav), but too many different/tough words to train, or so I thought at the time... :-)

Sure, I still play them every now and then as a matter of fact. It's a simple matter to fire up Applewin and turn your pc into an Apple II and play them in their monochrome green glory (see attached). :D And for that matter Atari800Win has made a lot of progress as of late and plays the Infocom games great as well. You can also play them very nicely on the Dreamcast (if you have a keyboard of course). :)

My favorite for nostalgic reasons is still Planetfall.. I dug Floyd the robot. I also like the zorks... but they were just so hard when I was a kid... those damn grues! :P

I picked up about 8 of these for the C64 a few years ago.

My memories of playing the games were mostly of Cutthroat and Zork I.

Zork II I think I was halfway and Zork III was bizarre. Hitchiker's was decent, I never made it off the Heart of Gold.

There are also a number of other companies that made text adventures...one of my favorites was Cyborg. Here are a few links to working archives still up and running (the top two ftp links have loads of stuff that you can download while-u-sleep by right-click/copy to folder)...

I still have the disks for at least a half dozen Infocom games stored away with my C-128: Zork I, II, III, Beyond Zork, Hitchiker's Guide and some murder mystery one I can't recall the name of - had a running gag about "red herrings" I think. Deadline?

So kenwood is trying to set the record with the most old posts dug up? ;)

But I did just run into this site last week, lets you play a lot of the Infocom games online in their full glory:

I've got the Infocom collection that they reissued in 1992 or so. It has one big instruction manual for the games and all the other little items that came with the games.

I guess it would still work on a PC today in MS-DOS mode.

I used to play quite a few of the Infocom text adventures, mostly on the C64/128; I had the Commodore releases of quite a few (Suspended, Starcross, Zork I, II, II), the Infocom boxed releases of several (Leather Goddesses, Plundered Hearts, Hitchhiker's Guide, Infidel, a few others), and varied releases on other platforms (Nord and Bert on PC; Starcross in the "frisbee" and Suspended in the "mask" for Apple II). I also have most of the Infocomics on 64 and PC. Always wanted to get the 128 releases (Zork Zero, Bureaucracy), but never did.

As an aside, I find this Zork I release fascinating: Japanese Saturn. There was a rerelease with Return to Zork, also documented on that site... I think Return to Zork also got a Japanese PSX release.

Of other companies, I *loved* the early Interplay releases through Activision; Tracer Sanction especially. I never cared for the Sierra games, Adventure International releases just didn't grab me, Magnetic Scrolls releases thru Rainbird/Firebird were gorgeous but boring.[/url]

I'm currently playing Moonmist on my 130XE for the first time, and am very much enjoying it; the parser is simply excellent.

I recall author Ian Chadwick stating that he loved attending Infocom's parties in Las Vegas, where they would often create elaborate sets based on (or inspired by) their popular games. I'd have loved to have gone to one of those!

BTW, does anyone have a boxed Plundered Hearts (XE) to sell to me? :)

To me there's lots of good stuff in older threads. And this is a message board so everything can be read again fresh. It's timeless! :D At least when it comes to videogame discussions.

However, I oughtta dig up previous "current event" threads....that outta really be nicely annoying

I still play them from time to time either in Catakig or on my actual IIgs. I particularly enjoyed The Lurking Horror and Infidel.

Another, non-Infocom paser-based game I enjoyed was Mask of the Sun.
