+DrVenkman Posted May 12, 2015 Share Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) Well I hate that Ray got banned - I had no bone to pick in those fights, and I'll say this as well: I have one of his SIO2USB/SIO21050 devices and it's great: meticulously well-made, reliable and functional with AspeQT(*), Atarimax PROSystem, SIO2OSX and SIO Server programs. He was nothing but courteous and professional in my personal dealings. (*) And now back to the subject at hand, AspeQT .... I tried to compile a native Mac version last summer for the developer previews of OS X Yosemite and had a series of odd issues, all of which seem to devolve back to QT's OS X support. I'd get spiking CPU usage, extended hesitations and pauses during straightforward disk I/O by the Atari, etc. I actually had better performance running the Windows version on my Mac under CrossOver! I can compile the SVN given on my 64bit laptop because it is running a newer version of ubuntu. The laptop that serves the computers is running ubuntu 14.04 and doesn't have Qt5 can anyone compile the svn on a 32 bit system and re-tarball it. I can do this but it would require a great deal of effort on my part. Probably best if we let this one lie - you will not find anyone here who will stick up for him or justify those actions. I hate to bring this topic back up, but I did feel that I should point out that at no time did Ray contact fjc's wife. That was an entire different situation that got out of control (the wonderful Centron 3D debacle). I'm out of this topic now. I use my Atari computers as a hobby, and I want my hobbies to be fun. See attached photos of my cheap tablet running AspeQt on Android 4.2.2. Kudos to you Qt people! serialport-unix.cpp must be re-written, but actually it's not that scary as it seemed to be. Yesterday I borrowed FTDI USB - RS232 adapter from CAD service people in my office and it works out of the box on 4.2.2, also FTDI seems really a pro company if it's about Android: http://www.ftdichip.com/Android.htm So, I've to buy one and have some fun with it . FTDI + SIO2PC could be the way to go without too much efforts... As I understand it he can only charge for distribution costs and technical support. His derived app must also come with all source code, including his own additions. Talk about a lucky escape - I only came to this thread because I was having trouble compiling the old source in debian... Lesson learned! I'm not inclined to find out any more either!!! Its a real shame because there seems to be so much negativity surrounding this project now but the version for Win32/64 worked pretty well. There are several important rules though: 1. He MUST give you the source if you ask basically 2. He cannot 'de-GPL' his software, since it is based on software which he obtained under the GPL 3. ANYONE who obtains the software/source code have the right to distribute it. The important thing to take away from this is that if ANYONE actually buys the software, then they should IMMEDIATELY ask for the source. If he doesn't comply, report him to the FSF. OK, here's basically what happened: atari8warez was picking fights, especially with flashjazzcat, a pretty well renowned member here, and also the writer/creator of some very great software such as all the APT stuff, The Last Word, and his in-progress GUI. Basically atari8warez just couldn't accept he was wrong, or let anyone else get the last word (no pun intended, even if FJC did write The Last Word). This continued, even after mods and Al (the owner of this site) told him to stop. Finally, a8w got WAY out of control, to the point where atari8warez ended up registering flashjazzcat on a number of adult websites. It was at this point that he was banned. After his banning, a8w threw a temper tantrum. He removed all of the code that was copyright by him from sourceforge for aspeqt. This is NOT in violation of the GPL, a8w maintains the copyright on any of the changes he made to aspeqt and he can do as he please with them. But his version of aspeqt is still a version of aspeqt, which he obtained originally under the GPL, and therefore his version must also be licensed under the GPL. To the best of my knowledge, this is correct. If anyone sees anything here in error, PLEASE let me know, I don't want to be spreading false information.
