If you could do a Jaguar dream project?

If you could make or commission one new game for the Jaguar, what would you make?

As dumb as it sounds, i'd do a four player mario party style game for the system using characters from the atari universe. After playing Atari Karts and the first few N64 mario parties here's why/how I think it could be done.

-Jag needs more fun/easy games to play with friends and ease them onto the Jag bandwagon

-Jag needs more 4 player games

-Jag graphically capable of handling board game style game like this

-Lessons could be taken from Nintendo mario party games to create great gameplay, maps, and mini-games that make up for lack or raw processing power on Jag relevant to those systems (N64 etc.)

-Plenty of fun mini games could be done on Jag pad using the various buttons on a standard 3 button controller.

That's it. If I had the money I'd totally bankroll and "Atari Party" game for Jag. lol

You?

Funny, I was thinking on the same lines the recently. And then Sonic Shuffle for the Dreamcast came to mind. Not an easy formula to pull off, even if you have a consistent universe of characters to work with. Would be fun to see though.

Atari Owls project would have been that dream project for me, an act/rpg with a very impressive 3d engine. Sadly i guess we will never see it completed :_( .

Now, about a dream project of my own... maybe a 3d version of Berzerk. It would be a FPS, with fully polygonal graphics, using only gourad shadding, and keeping the graphics very simple, hoping not only to mantain decent speed but retain the look of the original. Of course we would have Evil Otto, the death walls, the killer robots, a bunch of cool voice clips etc. It would mantain the pickup and play feeling of the classic, no complex controls, storyline or cinemas, just pure old school fun.

Or just get together a lot of money and ask the coder behind Quake 2 port for the Falcon, to do Quake on the Jaggy :-D :P . I have 5 bucks right here, who is willing to put more money on the table ;) ?

If it counts for purposes of this thread I would most want an Atari lynx convertor akin to the super gameboy. Outside of that I'd love another top down shooter along the lines of a toaplan game. Additionally you could probably put any game published by apogee in the mid 90s and I'd love it and it would feel in keeping with the jags current library to me (death rally, terminal velocity, Halloween Harry etc)

Using the Lynx as a controller/subscreen would be awesome! The code is there, just needs to be implemented.

Dream version: Voice modem becomes a reality.

But honestly: Catan / Risk / Monopoly. (hell, even the Lynx has monopoly!) Those would be awesome party games, save setup times and be easily down via a team tap (or trade a controller).

Here is a massive dream project:

1. Any one of the board games, above.

2. Use the Lynx as a sunscreen to track your cards/real estate/cash/etc

3. Be able to use the voice modem/interwebs to do multiplayer over the net!

There you go! The ultimate home brew!™

It's not really a "Jaguar" project, but my dream project would be to orchestrate some kind of buyout of Atari in its current incarnation with a group of like-minded retro enthusiasts. The company in its current incarnation is an utter joke, the stock trades for 18 cents a share, and the business model currently being pursued is about as poor of a business plan as I've ever seen in my life. When I hear "Atari" I don't think casino gaming or GLBT-themed gaming. I did actually read that on their website if you don't believe me. Looking at the company's financial performance, it's a continuous downward trend over a decade and the current ideas are the worst of all, IMHO. Meanwhile, there are people out there like Jeff Minter who are essentially doing Atari a favor with TxK and how does Atari respond??? Threats of legal action.

You might be asking, "Why would I want to do this?" Most of the intellectual property that we know and love is basically being squandered and frankly the company is valued at such a low number right now that we could get that intellectual property at a pretty decent discount.

I think Atari could be a moderately successful small company by focusing on the retro game market. I'm not talking about re-issuing the consoles, or anything like that, but I am envisioning a company that would and could work with the many people already creating homebrew games and accessories today. And I don't necessarily see that being a forced relationship. If someone out there wanted to make a new version of Battlezone or Crystal Castles or *whatever*, I think it would behoove the company to work with the developer in order to allow them to use the legitimate IP. Perhaps Atari could assist with production of the actual cartridges, if a developer wanted to go that route. In addition, they could do things like moderately sized runs of certain accessories like 7800 AC adaptors, new accessories of all kinds, perhaps even an online store that sold homebrew games. Every now and again, the company could license retro compilations on larger consoles and platforms (PC, iPhone, Android, etc) which would probably provide a nice cash infusion.

It just seems it's a damn shame looking at the way its run when there is the potential there to do it right. There will be Atari collectors for years to come and they will want new things. It's a small market, I know this, but it's a devoted market.

A 2D or 3D game that pushes the Jaguar's capabilities :P

2D probably a Tiny Toons game... kind of like Rayman but with show gags, some voice samples, and little bit better graphics (as Rayman failed to measure up graphically to some other versions on other platformes, but I think it could've).

3D some sort of action or beat 'em up like Syphon Filter, Tomb Raider, or Die Hard Arcade would've been cool. I know it'd look terrible, but just seeing the extent the Jaguar could've handled it would've been something.

I'd love some 2D light gun games like Beast Buster & Crypt Killer.

I would've liked to see a large 2D RPG with CD quality music on cart.

Also wish we would've seen the Centipede RPG title finished.

My typical Jag fan answer would be Alone in the Dark.

something fps based on the i-war code:

cyber fps with stylised robots, lots of lasers and power-ups, shields, jump power up and so on, split screen + jaglink = 4 players. Don't know if jaguar would be able, but it's a dream.

could call it "Code masters" or something: all of a sudden all players get a number code in their screen. the first one to tap it in on the numpad will get a power up = bazooka, jump pack, health, extra life or something.

only lots of deathmatch levels against bots in single game, much like quake 3. som bosses. you have a number of lives, or frags, then it's over.

LGBT gaming? Is that an April fools joke or something?

How pathetic and sad what Atari has turned into.

Jaguar needs a Snow Bros. Collection.

This would consist of parts 1, and 2 from the arcade, along with an all-new part 3 that contains new gameplay elements, and maybe even four players (can borrow the two princesses from the Genesis version for extra characters). The new elements could be vertical or horizontal scrolling time-attack style levels or something. Plenty of ideas out there I'm sure.

The Jaguar hardware could totally handle it.

I also really like the idea someone stated above of a 3D Berzerk, but still being faithful to the old style. 3D Frenzy would be a logical addition too. It would be cool trying to do those bouncing shots in 3D for sure.

I'd personally skip the 3D nonsense that would be better on other systems anyway and just create an epic 2D game that used as much of the Jaguar's capabilities as possible. It would be nice to see a Neo Geo-level game tuned to what the Jaguar is specifically designed for.

Clever question.

I like Bill's line of thought. When considering this Jaguar dream project, it would be nice if it was something that really exploited the Jaguar's strengths.

I wouldn't immediately throw out all 3D. Specifically, I'd throw out the idea of doing a texture-mapped game but shaded polygons or a raytracing engine seem as Jaguar-idiosyncratic as sprites.

The Jaguar controller also makes me think that the designers felt like this would be the first home system that was truly capable of handling PC strategy and simulation ports. The multimedia focus also furthers the idea that this was just a platform for more than watered-down arcade conversions.

So I love the RPG ideas. What about an adventure game? I'm thinking something like Sierra's later Quest for Glory games. They combined adventure, RPG, and arcade-style battle scenes. This takes advantage of the Jaguar's mix of arcade controller and keypad.

Now here's where I get really crazy:

  • Initial game on cartridge.
  • Expansion libraries on CD Rom.
  • Voice Modem and Networking compatible, so two+ people can explore the world simultaneously. Simultaneous gameplay is classic prisoner's dilemma:
    • You can collaborate and beat the beasts more easily
    • But there can only be one winner: Whoever assembles the "triforce."
    • Meaning that at any one time, any human may hold some number of fragments of the "triforce."
  • Number pad directly tied to 2nd screen (Lynx), which simply tracks inventory. That way, no one can peek at your screen and see your inventory in networked play.

While I'm financing this, I might as well create a world-building toolkit for the ST/Falcon, so others could build new expansions and burn them to CD. This would work under emulation on a Mac/PC, of course. ;)
