Playing the Colecovision Adam in 4k and 3D

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone and happy Saturday!

I know the title is “slightly” misleading, however, I thought it would be nice to share with you all how my Adam is running on a 4K LG TV at 480p at 60Hz.

Before I start though, I took some pictures to show how the screen looks, unfortunately the pictures do not do justice on how incredibly crisp the graphics are. Take my word on it though, it is bar none the cleanest display I have ever seen for an Adam Computer.

Since the TV also supports passive 3D (comes with two glasses) I tried them out (and so did my daughter) and it was actually pretty awesome. I know, I didn’t think it would work, and honestly, I have no idea how it does, but when you turn on 3D with the glasses on, any game on the Adam goes 3D. Burgertime in 3D is amazing!

Also, I like the idea of running my retro games on a 4K monitor, I have a Sega Dreamcast running great on it also with the same configuration with one additional mod that I will go over later.

So here are the parts I used to get this display:

  1. Adam computer modded with the F18A video mod (Thanks rey_1178)
  2. Etekcity® Mini 1080P VGA to HDMI Converter Adapter (Amazon)
  3. LG Electronics 49UB8500 49-Inch 4K Ultra HD 120Hz 3D Smart LED TV (2014 Model) (Amazon)
  4. HDMI Cable (don’t need a 2.0 or anything like that)
  5. 3.5mm Audio Cable adapter to plug into the back of the Adam (for the F18A Video mod)

If you look at the Adam screen with the printer up, you can see the settings to the top right for verification.

Rey_1178 was a huge help in everything here, I have been playing with this for a few weeks now and wanted to get this up before but just didn’t have the time. It’s nice to have all these mods to the Adam (also have rey_1178 power supply) and it makes it easy to play my old games on new output devices.

It’s great to play these games with the kiddos!

Can you display at 4:3 aspect ratio on that TV if you choose or does it stretch the picture to 16:9?

Sorry Yurkie for getting back late to you on this, I play this in 4:3, I have not even tried to streak it to 16:9 as I am very happy with 4:3

I don't like it streched. 4:3 is the way to go.
