Willard #2 Posted June 10, 2015 thats the first i've ever seen anyone put a figure on how much the CDi lost Philips. Never would've guessed it was that much.
Rick Dangerous #3 Posted June 10, 2015 (edited) thats the first i've ever seen anyone put a figure on how much the CDi lost Philips. Never would've guessed it was that much. Yep. I've read that before. 1 BILLION dollars. You can bet a few people lost their shirts on that one. I don't think Atari could even raise a billion dollars to spend on the jaguar and lose, given production numbers and lifespan of the system. The formerly great Atari INC could've spent that much and more off-budget on pot, hookers, and blow.

If only the Jag lived long enough to tap into the unharnessed 64-bit 3D POWAH! Their stock would've gone through the roof, one billion would've been chump change for them. Or if Rayman had come out a year earlier.
Jagosaurus #6 Posted June 11, 2015 They might've lost 1 billion on the CDi platform but how many billions did they make on the compact disc format in general, founding the technology along side Sony.

Schmudde #8 Posted June 11, 2015 Nice. The article gives a hat tip to the brilliant Daniel Rehn. He's doing this TV Guide project now, as I understand it. If you're into digital archeology and aesthetics, be sure to check out his work. /Schmüdde

That's the thing -- Philips took a chance on the CD-I and clearly lost their shirt on it, but they made a lot more money form the other stuff the company was producing, so it didn't sink them. It's similar to the story with Microsoft and the original Xbox....I keep reading different figures about how much the company lost on the console, but they clearly were willing to take the financial hit to get their name out there in the console business and get the platform going. Lost Dragon #10 Posted June 20, 2015 This claim correct? 'Phillips turnover for 1992 was around $30,000,000, 000 althought this was largely made up of sales of their lightbulbs'.
