I went this route, just ordered this morning.

never had this model before, but i have had 4 of the sp model.

Is that a stock model? Obviously the bad thing about it is no back light whatsoever. I've seen them modded with a newer 3rd party kit (no longer being produced) as well as the one from the SP AGS-101. Also seen them model with li-on rechargeable batteries!

Well, black GBA exists. GBA came in so many color and styles (and being region free to boot) it would be hard to collect em all. Especially collecting all CIB. Here's a honest source of GBA's known color https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Game_Boy_colors_and_styles#Game_Boy_Advance

Custom shells are on eBay so one could get other color but that would be cheating.

I have 2 original GBA's modded with back-lit screens as that is my favorite GBA version. I never liked the SP much as i dont feel its as comfortable to hold. My hands aren't huge either.

Besides ebay, can anyone recommend a place online to buy original game boy carts? I would like to see pictures of the actual carts if possible. Not looking for rare titles, or NIB with instructions. Thanks

If there are any local game resale shops (ie not Game Stop), they will probably have tons of GB, GBC, and GBA games under the glass. Popular GBA titles such as M&L SS, Mario Advance series, etc you will pay a prremium but tons of great games for $10 and under. GBA is slowly becoming more collectible now while GBC/GB are still relatively cheap.

is there a Nintendo DS section on the forums? i searched for DS but didn't find it.

No. Just the Modern Gaming section.

We also have a Wii section but no Wii-U specific forum. But creating a sub-forum for every system that exists would only serve to clutter the forum I think.

That's why we need generic Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft sections in the modern gaming forum instead of the bizarre current setup.

Would give an obvious home to much of the discussion without overly subdividing it all, while leaving the general modern gaming area free for multiplatform discussions, PC games, mobile games, and other topics that don't fall neatly into one of the three sub-forums (But which don't have the traffic to justify dedicated sub-forums).

Mentioned it several times over the years, but while it makes perfect sense to me, some apparently aren't in agreement.

Hmm. I never noticed the PS4 and Xbone forums until now. Wii-U has been on the market a year longer and no such sub forum exists. One of the admins must be a Ninty-hater... :ponder:

Am I the only one who actually likes the look of the AGS 001 screen? I like the blue tint it has and it lets me see what's going on onscreen without being too bright. And a lot of the GBA games have the color brightness turned up way too high to account for the dark screen on the original GBA, so the backlit model makes that even more apparent.

Still better than my Lynx screen, and that is perfectly acceptable to me as well! NDS is the best screen for GBA games. SP (any model) hurts my hands. Game Boys aren't too bad though because I don't need the triggers so my index finger can stretch out under the lid.

zetastrike:

i agree with your assessment about the flaws of the ags-101 for some uses. i also like the ags-001 better for 3 reasons:

1. I have a growing collection of original gameboy games which look better on the ags-001 (i recently got my silver ags-001 for $10, but $25 - $30 is normal)

2. the ags-101 is harder to find and costs at least $30 more than the ags-001 (i know, there's plenty of $100 ags-101's on ebay with cheap aftermarket plastics)

3. i prefer the standard red, blue, black, and silver color gba sp's to the pearl pink and pearl blue ags-101 models (ditto cheap plastics in other colors.)

am i the only one in this forum that thinks the "nes game pad" themed gba sp is nothing special? i had one and i sold it.

I just ordered a GB Boy Colour from a US seller. Hopefully it will be here by early next week and I'll be able to provide my opinions on it afterwards.

I got my GB Boy Colour today. It's in the car at the moment as I picked it up on the way in to work tonight, so I can't vouch for the quality yet. However, I would like to mention, if you are interested in ordering one of these, it's probably best just to do it from the sources mentioned earlier in the thread, not eBay. I paid $10 more assuming I would get it faster and in better condition, but the shipper shipped slow and they didn't even put it in its own box or bubble envelope--they slapped the shipping label and tape right to the box of the GB Boy Colour. Disappointing. I'll chime in with my thoughts on the unit itself in the next couple of days.

So I gave the GB Boy Colour a try this morning and my thoughts on it are mixed. On the positive side of things, the screen is bright and crisp. The build quality seems decent and the mold itself feels pretty much just like a stock GBC. The face buttons are fine as well. Sound appears to be fine too. On the negative side of things, there's a wavy nature to the picture (probably due to the incorrect screen size), almost like the screen tearing you see with modern games but more noticeable depending on the game. The d-pad is also a weak point of the system. It's one single piece so pressing too hard will turn your up-left diagonal movement into a bottom-right diagonal movement (basically the whole d-pad plastic presses down and actuates all directions at once, making undesirable movement occur). I was testing it with Battletoads which requires sharp precision and timing and was getting wrecked in the Turbo Tunnel because I kept going opposite of the direction I was actually pressing. I like the device but for the price I'd say just go with a GBA SP, it's not much more and there won't be issues with screen tearing or the d-pad.

i love that the GB Boy Colour includes a colorized version of an obscure favorite title, Bubble Ghost.

It is colorized? I didn't paid attention. I was just blasted to see here - Bubble ghost is a game by ERE Informatique, one of the oldest French developers and publishers, and it was really a surprise to see such an obscure title making it's way here.

Played through the first GB Mega Man this morning on the GB Boy Coulour and it fared much better. Screen issues weren't as noticeable and since movement primarily relies on left and right only, I didn't have an issue with the d-pad either. If you aren't playing super fast-paced games and have games with relatively solid backgrounds (versus the complex/detailed backdrops of the second GB Battletoads game), the GB Boy Colour should do the trick. Still no word on battery life yet, I haven't sunk enough time into it yet.

Oh yeah, to get back on topic I suppose, it works great with my Everdrive.

I recently ordered a backlit original Gameboy from this site with additional mods for sound and contrast:

Here's a video with one of these beauties in action:

Nice! Love that green... I'm going to be picking up my own custom Game Boy shortly. I found a guy on Nintendoage with a couple case mods to sell. Looks like he used the same parts available from Game Boy Mods. Too bad it doesn't have backlight... :P

It is a bit tricky to install the backlight yourself. You have to remove the old reflective film from the back of the LCD without cracking the glass or ripping out the ribbon cable. Then there's the gummy residue that a few Gameboy LCD just refuses to let me clean out.

Once that hard part is done, it is worthwhile. Not as nice as Gameboy SP 101 but very old-style LCD without needing external light.

I never thought I'd see someone complain about the *EXCELLENCE* that is the AGS-101 ("Now With Brigher Sceen" model), until I saw this post, a few above......

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/239444-gameboy-everdrive/page-3?do=findComment&comment=3270483

I'd have never guessed that somebody wanted a side-lit, washed out shit display. Granted, when the first GBA-SP came out, it was the best for the time, and a huge leap. But the 101 "brigher screen" model is the first time - in the history of portable gaming - that we saw a no-compromise, bright, high-contrast, kick-ass "I can see everything clearly" screen. Or do I have that wrong???

I have a green backlight on order; wish me luck! Not sure if I'm gonna attempt the bivert mod though. I'll play it normal for a while first and see how I like the contrast. It have an adjustment wheel for a reason...

It will royally suck if I f*** up this Game Boy! :o
