airsoftmodels #101 Posted November 20, 2015 heck, i spent hundreds of hours on the original game boy and now when i want to play original game boy games, they look great on the gba ags-001. however, its hard to play gba games on that dimmer screen. Andromeda Stardust #102 Posted November 21, 2015 Old post I know, but I spent many hundreds of hours on the 001 when it came out and I loved it. Now, years later, a friend passed along his 001 to me since he recently picked up a 101. After seeing the side-by-side, I'll admit the screen on the 101 is a little nicer yes, but there isn't such a world of difference that nations will slide into the sea if someone plays a 001 over a 101. As for me, while I love playing on original hardware, I find I much prefer playing Gameboy games from all generations on my DS Lite. The larger device feels nicer in my hands and with the flash cart I have I can take quite a few games with me without having to physically haul around a pile of carts. Nothing wrong with the AGS-001 screen. Sure the 101 is better, but I'm not sure it's worth the premium. My bigger issue with the GBA-SP in general is that it cramps my large man hands. In fact I bought the GBA-SP in 2004 and after sever hand cramping after a couple hours of Super Circuit, I immediately went to Walmart and bought one of the original purple GBAs they had on clearance. SP is not so bad for playing Game Boy, but for GBA games that make extensive use of the L and R triggers, the original GBA or a DS "Phat" is a must. So DS-phat for GBA games, GBA classic + Worm light for GB/GBC. So I think I'm in the minority for preferring the classic GBA (with Worm light) over either of the GBA-SP models.

The size is definitely the downside of the SP. One of the greatest handheld consoles in my opinion, but now that I have adult-sized hands it doesn't cut it for me. That's a big reason I prefer playing GBA games on the DS lite, my hands have a lot more room to move around.
CatPix #104 Posted November 23, 2015 Agree. I have the same problem wih most Nintendo handhelds. It's why i picked up the N3DS XL and not the standard size. Tho the problem is more that the SP is so cramped that when I play it, my thumbs touch, it's a very unnatural and uncomfortable position for adult hands to have, just because it's so tiny. Yeah totally. When I play classic Game Boy games on the SP, I can hold it semi-comfortably by extending my index fingers wrapping behind upper corners of the top screen to brace the system. Reaching the triggers with those same fingers requires a contortion act on my part. My ring sizes range from 13-14 on my middle and index fingers to a 12 on my ring fingers for comparison. They are quite long as well. I can easily reach across a standard sized keyboard using the span between my pinkie and thumb for instance to hit Q + Right Shift one handed. That's one of the reasons why I shook my head and laughed when Nintendo released the GBA Micro in 2005. $100, smaller screen, no backwards compatibility with GB/C, and even more hand crampiness? No thanks; I'll keep my DS Phat thank you...
Cynicaster #106 Posted November 26, 2015 (edited) Yeah, I have an SP but I never play it because I can't stand holding it for more than 5 minutes. Not only does it cramp my hands, but I pretty much have to hold it with my fingertips, which provides no stability. If I'm playing a game that requires quick button pressing, the screen starts shaking around and I can't even see what I'm doing. I also have an original brick GB, which is much better in the hands, but the contrast is terrible. Now I'm getting to the point where I'm saying to hell with it, if I want to play those games on the go I'll just emulate them on my tablet and use my XBOX360 controller, which I take with me whenever I travel for work anyway. Stable, high-contrast, enourmous screen (comparatively speaking) with modern, ergonomic controller, and full library of games available... seems like a no-brainer. Tanooki #107 Posted August 11, 2017 Just realized this exists. I got one of them in the mail today a barely used second hand stoneagegamer deluxe set and with a loaded 8GB card with it too. I tried to use the thing on my GB Boy Colour and all it does it reset the system which sucks. I don't think it was built well and has a power requirement enough it can't handle the cart right as it's fine in my GBA SP. :\ Not sure if I can find a work around which blows, it's like give the knockoff GBC to my kid or use it on my legit library. Amazing cart it is, good response time, handles it all other than the (to me) mostly pointless RTC since the only one that uses it I care about I own - Pokemon Crystal. I read the new X models use a little less power, probably make the GB Boy Colour happier, but I'm not trading this out for cheap chinese knockoff systems. Andromeda Stardust #108 Posted August 13, 2017 Get a real gameboy and forget the clone garbage...
Tanooki #109 Posted August 13, 2017 I have many real gameboys actually, but I really would prefer a GBC that actually was bright and poppy like the knockoff. I know BennVenn does one but it's a $200 custom job. I've got 2 DMG, 2 SP, GBC, GBP, 2 original GBA and a Micro around here and the big box Super Gameboy.
