A little help with RS Baseball, please

I bought this at the PC recently and can't for the life of me, figure out how to pitch properly. It seems I can throw the ball to the catcher (button + down) but it doesn't seem to be a pitch, nor can I control the ball, so I can't throw strikes.

 

Any help?

Basically, you have to program in a pitch before throwing to the catcher.

 

Push up for fastball, left for a rising pitch, right for sinker, and down for an intentional ball. THEN you push the button and pull down to throw to the catcher...
