The Game Boy Advance can be used as a Game Boy Player controller.gameboy-advance-link-cable.jpg

Oh wow! I knew that the GameCube - Game Boy Advance Link Cable could be used to transfer data between GameCube and GBA games and do second screen multiplayer in the games that support it, but I had no idea that you could use it to make your GBA act as a controller for the Game Boy Player. I'll definitely have to pick one of those (and an original model Game Boy Advance) up at some point when I get around to re-buying a GameCube and Game Boy Player. I ended up selling my old GameCube and Game Boy Player last year when the Cube died on me, but I really do need to get one again at some point. Anyway, thanks for the great tip! :)

Cool! Never noticed that cable before. I am going to try one out. Got one on the way. Thanks for the post.

You just need a Game Cube controller to access the Game Boy Player menu(Z button) and they can be hookup up at the same time because all four ports control the Game Boy Player. So, if you wanted to you could use four different controller solutions at the same time if you have different preferences for different games and/or want to take turns with someone else without switching controllers(Mario Party Advance). It works with the SP too. You can select color palettes when a game is booting up, Z and Start at the same time can be used to quickly change games, L and R still change the screen size for GB and GBC games, and I assume start, select, A, and B at the same time still resets games as a Game Boy does.

forgive me if this is a little off topic for this thread but i value the opinion of gameboy fans. my daughter really seems to enjoy playing kirby planet robobot on the 3ds xl when we go to target. keep in mind that i don't plan to buy a bunch of ds games cause i can't afford it. but, should i buy her the $199 3ds xl and this kirby game for $39, or should i buy her the 2ds for $79 (the price point of this model reminds me of the GBA price point back in the day) which comes with yoshi's new island, and looks like a very good game as well. also, would kirby planet robobot look terrible on the 2ds? or, should i not buy her either. thanks.

Hey guys! I have just done a review of Shrek Fairytale Freakdown on the Gameboy Colour on my YouTube channel, Byron's Reviews. If you are interested, I would highly appreciate it if you could check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks guys! :)

Hey Byron,

Nice review as always. My cousin had this new when it came out at Toys R Us. I didn't think much of it. But she loved it to no end. I think she still has it in her GBC collection. I'm happy for her seeing that she's still a Shrek fan since she was small. :)

Thank you again Byron. Keep up the great work.

Do you guys think a Gameboy Light is worth picking up? I was thinking of picking up one from Ebay that's in average at best condition, then sending it to a customizer to be repainted and cleaned up.

I already have a backlit/biverted DMG and an AGS-001, but something about the Light just intrigues me.

There's a question that's been on my mind a lot lately: How do you guys & gals store your loose Game Boy Advance games? I've been trying to track down a compartmented storage box with 2.5" wide divided compartments to keep all my GBA carts lined up in neat alphabetized rows, but I've yet to find any that would be the right size for the job. I'm discovering that GBA carts are kind of a nightmare to try to keep in orderly rows without dividers (especially when you have a lot of them) or spending a small fortune on plastic cases for each game so I'm wondering how you folks store your GBA carts and if anyone might have any suggestions for a particular storage box that works well.

If you live anywhere near a Daiso, start stalking it for these:

This unassuming lil' bin is the single most perfect portable game storage thing I've never found, and my damn Daiso won't restock them! It fits GBA wonderfully, allows room for cases if you prefer, and- it stacks on itself. I have two of these holding all of my loose GBA, Neo-Geo Pocket (because those fit ok too), and original game boy games in a nice, neat lil' pile.

Seriously- if anyone finds these, buy me a couple more? I've been checking for months!

I've been sitting on the GBA follow-up to my 350+ Game Boy & Game Boy Color Games Worth Playing list for a couple months now, debating over whether or not to include a handful of board game compilations that I personally enjoy but received poor critical reception or a few import games with Japanese language menus. I never could make up my mind about them, but now that the EverDrive X5 is out I think it's time to just go ahead and share my list anyway.

As with my previous Game Boy & Game Boy Color list, the list below may not be a 100% all inclusive list of every last game on the Game Boy Advance that any given person might enjoy playing but I do hope that those interested in the Game Boy Advance find it to be a useful reference guide for the games that are generally considered to be good; or at the very least an enjoyable representation of their respective genres, as in the case of some of the sports games and board game compilations. Whether you are new to collecting for the Game Boy Advance, a seasoned veteran hunting for some new games to pick up, or just someone looking to fill out their EverDrive X5 with quality titles, there should be something for everyone here. Also, as before with my Game Boy & Game Boy Color list, I have taken the time to include the current average price of each game based on eBay sold listings for loose cartridges with good condition labels in the hopes that it will help make this list a handy quick reference guide for those who might stumble on a game they're interested in out in the wild but aren't sure whether or not the price is good.

Finally, be aware that while all of the Japanese import games listed below are fully playable by those who only understand English, a handful of them do have Japanese text menus that you will have to navigate to begin the game. For those games (mainly Densetsu no Stafy 1-3 and Rhythm Tengoku) I'm providing a link to a handy Guide For Understanding The Basics Of Japanese Game Menu Text that should help you get you through the menus without any trouble. :)

Now, without further ado...

Bumping this thread up to see if anyone here has any custom backlit Game Boys, frontlit Game Boy Colors, or modified Game Boy Advance systems that they'd like to share some pictures of?

I finally added a backlight (olive green colored from http://www.deadpanrobot.co.uk ) to my original Game Boy last week and it came out brilliantly. :)

KAjzs6B.jpg

I also managed to snag a complete and working AGS-001 model Game Boy Advance SP LCD display for $13.49 on eBay this week, so next week I plan to install the front light from it in my Game Boy Color once I'm able to swing down to Radio Shack to pick up a 47 ohm resistor and some wiring for the project.

How about you guys and gals? Have any custom systems that you'd like to share?

Is that biverted? I do have a custom DMG, a clear Play it Loud version that has a white backlight and bivert as well as all clear buttons and d-pad. I'll grab a pic of it tonight.

I also have this Gameboy Light that I really like and I have a pic of on hand.

Is that biverted?

Beautiful Game Boy Light! I've always thought those were such cool looking systems with their electroluminescent backlighting. The backlight color reminds me the glow in the dark wrist watches that I thought were so cool as a kid.

As far as my Game Boy goes, I decided not to bivert the display because I do most of my handheld gaming either outdoors on smoke breaks or in fairly well lit rooms when I'm playing indoors, and external light tends to make biverted DMG screens wash out too much for my liking. I did own a biverted Game Boy at one point last year but quickly sold it when I discovered that it was nearly impossible to use in the places that I like to play in.

I have been enjoying my non-biverted DMG system so much though that I am already working on building two more of them. One themed around the Virtual Boy with a black and red color scheme coupled with an inverted red backlight (inverted by way of a hex inverter chip rather than inverting the polarization film, so I don't run into screen wash out in well lit environments) and the other will be themed after the character in my avatar with a purple/pink/blue color scheme and a pink backlight. It'll probably take me a month and a half or so to finish them due to budgetary constraints but they should both be fun projects. :)

As promised

Absolutely awesome! I love that you used one of the original white colored D-pad membrane contacts and clear Select & Start buttons to give the whole system a really clean and elegant aesthetic design. As far as my own systems go, I actually got a rather nice little package in the mail from Kitsch-Bent today; and I put it to good use by upgrading my Game Boy Advance SP with some fancy new custom colored buttons tonight. :)

gameboy was like having a portable nes just monochrome, which didnt bother me, so many memories of playing dk land, dk 94, baseball, marios picross, mario land, james bond 007, pokemon red, i regret selling mine, sure i could emulate if i wanted to, but its not the same :?

I don't know about that. On the right games, the gameboy graphics look far superior to me (albeit monochrome) than anything on the NES. Nemesis is one example of superior graphics in my mind at least.

I agree with both of you. On principle that was my big exact train of thought on the Gameboy when it came out and I got it for Christmas that year (89) is that it was a portable NES. But then I noticed that some games started to up the bar beyond. Super Mario Land 2 with a 'Super' Mario using a monochrome sprite body of the SNES character which threw me for a loop. You had other games especially from more established console makers who really tried to squeeze insanity out of that little screen. While Mega Man mirroed well the NES, others like Gargoyle's Quest really upped the bar until later the sequel appeared on the NES and it was modeled like the GB but in color. Yet you look at Konami and it was all over the board. I'd argue as fine as it was TMNT1 was more of a downgrade over the NES in gameplay quality and visuals and Castlevania in part was a mix of better and worse (1 and 2) but then you squeeze into Nemesis that one was an upgrade outside of the ship sprite...and the rarer to find sequel Gradius the Interstellar Assault was pure eye candy that said I want nothing to do with looking like a NES game.

Gameboy was all over the board, but if you put a decent effort in you'd match NES quality on its better to best days, yet when someone really dug into it, perhaps got a perfectionist streak going it would exceed it in every way. Sometimes things would approach a low to no color SNES level of basic end style with that Mario sprite or Legend of Zelda Links Awakening (DX or not.)

Gameboy is something I've had a lot of experience with both in ownership of a few 100 titles over time, but also abusing the hell out of emulators to really explore in the 90s and earlier 00s. And it slacked Pokemon Red/Yellow aside until the GBC days which were downright insane.
