Is Commodore 64 International Tennis an Intellivision Tennis Clone?

This 1985 C64 game is actually news to me, just stumbled over it when surfin´ around.

The stands, the crowd and the overall feel and look are very much like Inty Tennis.

Btw, Tennis is one of my all time consoles/computers favorite game. Just Love it. One of those games that makes the controllers come to it´s own.

My gut says that it isn't intended as a clone but rather there just are only so many ways you can render a perspective view from the side of a tennis court. I could easily be wrong.

 

That said, there is quite a similarity.

If you look at the tennis games available for the C-64, they come in three basic types, with the most popular being the traditional modified top-down view, followed by isometric/3D, followed by this modified side perspective. Pretty much until you got to the 16-bit era, all tennis games more or less looked the same for obvious reasons, so I would think this was more coincidence than anything. With that said, few games were developed in a vacuum, so the Intellivision version may very well have served as inspiration, particularly since it was a relatively high profile release for the platform.

Tennis on the Intellivision is also one of my favourites. Did you get a chance to play Super Pro Tennis (from IntelligentVision)? It's Tennis, but with a single player mode!

 

I no longer have to pester my sisters to play Intellivision with me, especially since they moved away and have their own lives with kids and husbands.
