How much are 1040STs worth nowadays anyways?

Hi.

 

I grew up with an Atari 1040ST. I had like, everything. Modems, printers, one of those huge hard drive enclosures that the colour monitor would sit on top of, tons of disks, games, joysticks, manuals, dust covers, a Forget-Me-Not clock, everything. And then one year my basement flooded, and I stupidly chucked everything. Probably my biggest regret as far as computer collecting goes.

 

Out of pure nostalgia alone I decided to go back and look for a new 1040ST, but I found all the prices on eBay are, well... way out of my range.

 

What are reasonable prices for even just a system, hard drive and monitor?

 

I'd also like to note that I live in Canada, so prices would probably be different here, than say, anywhere in Europe.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it but I'm pretty sure that's not the answer you're looking for so I'll say I've generaly seen just the system go for between $50 and $75 in good condition.

The price also depends of where you are looking for one, where I am residing right now, South America, first of all if you can find one the price range is between $300 (for a ST, main unit only) upto $600 (for a STE, main unit only).

 

But look for one in Europe and you can find them dirt cheap, I got a 1040STFM and 1040STE for less than €50 (and both had a monitor included). I had to pay around €200 shipping cost but still a great deal .

Resonably priced and what they are going for, sadly, are two different things. I don't really understand why STs go for more than 60 bucks sometimes and I can understand that since the STe sold in a limited qty that it would be slightly more expensive but I've yet to find one reasonably priced for me to buy... and that would be in the $100 range. Nothing beats the real deal, nothing... but price and space combined, I find it hard to go back in most cases to the original hardware. Nevermind the fact that I'm doing just that despite my concern for prices haha...

but since he is in north america, he still has to buy a new power supply 110v not 220v and that is around $80 from best electronics with shipping, on top of shipping from europe, and a montior from europe doesnt work in north america either. just easier to find one here. they are everywhere

Both statements are wrong, no need for a new power supply, only needs a 110v to 220v voltage converter which you can get for less that $20, and the monitor would just work fine. I have been using both computers and monitors from all around the world since the 70s and never had any problem, when I lived in Europe, most stuff I had was imported from the US and all I needed to use was a voltage converter to get it to work.

Some brands of PSU can actually run 110V - 240V without a converter. But I have not seen many. It is worth looking on the bottom of the PSU on the input voltage sticker before anything else.

 

Has anyone actually tried running a 240V PSU on 110V anyway ? These are switchmodes and really they should not care about input voltage that much :-\

but again, why spend that amount of money on shipping, possibly receiving the system or monitor broken in shipping (happened to me getting a 1040ste from england), when they are everywhere around here (Canada/United States). and you dont have to convert anything, monitors are in 60hz, (50hz flickers) , unless you are wanting something rare, there is no need to order from europe. and for the power suppies, the 220v ones that i tried didnt work for me plugged straight in. they just hummed.

Let a point be made that an Atari 1040STe (note the "e") is worth considerably more than is just a 1040ST. I'd say 1040STf, then 1040STfm, then 1040STe, in order of increasing value. Just my thought.

Well, from how you're describing it, it sounds more like the center of the galaxy, which is just a huge black hole. But, as singularities go, I'm sure it's lovely.
