Lynx prototype from RJ Mical

Recommended Posts

I am just sharing this from user Marcel Franquinet from the Lynx fan group on Facebook.

Apparently, he was invited to RJ Mical's home, where RJ showed him some rare Lynx memorabilia. Rare as in "I have never seen it before".

Beside what appears to be a dev system and a Lynx design document, RJ also showed two slightly different prototypes of the Lynx itself. They are very different looking from the final version. Enjoy!

The two Lynx prototypes:

Great stuff, fantastic that so many cool new things for the Lynx are happening so long after it came out.

That 'd-pad' looks really uncomfortable, are you supposed to stick your thumb in the center or something?

Would be so cool if that documentation could be digitized.

Those design documents are always a great read for historical purposes.

Thank you so much for sharing! Always so cool to see something totally new for an old system you love and collect for :)

If those early prototypes were the ones they pitched to the focus group then they definitely picked the best one to go for. In my opinion the Lynx 1 is far superior to the Lynx 2. Its just better built, feels better and looks stunning. Great pics though. Anyone know if the first 2 shown work?

I also prefer the Lynx 1 over the 2, it looks more elegant to me.

Probably the most important thing I learned from the Lynx: never trust focus groups. In all the focus group testing, and we did a lot of it with consumers, we had a bunch of different models that we showed them. [We asked] "which one do you like? Which one would you like to have it be?" We showed them big ones; we showed them little ones. We showed them gigantic ones; we showed them little tiny ones. They loved the big ones. They all told us, "Make it big. Make it big. This one feels like it's substantial and I'm really getting my money's worth." They all told us to make it big, so we made it big. And when it came out on the market, they all said, "Why is this damn thing so big?" It'd drive me nuts, because the original Lynx was mostly air space inside. We put it in, because that's what they told us they wanted.

I find the Lynx 1 butt ugly, and the Lynx 2 very stylish. But the Lynx 1 is more comfortable to hold for me.

Was just thinking about these hardware prototypes the other day.  Has any more information or pictures come to light about these?  Very curious how the control-wheel / dpad would have worked.

I would frame that and hang it in my gameroom!
