Intellfan #1 Posted July 31, 2015 I just got back from seeing Pixels . I thought it was good . It wont win any Academy awards but was fun. Loved seeing all the video games they showed Even saw some Burgertime characters . Has anyone else seen it? If you grew up in the 80's I think it is a must see . My 15 year old was not impressed but my 11 year old liked it but she plays Intellivision with me

Atari_Bill #3 Posted July 31, 2015 I'm planning to see it this weekend. I don't give a crap about the overblown critics full of themselves. This seems like something I'll really enjoy.
DZ-Jay #4 Posted July 31, 2015 Thanks for the short review. I am planning on going this week-end to see it. I know that Wreck-It Ralph inspired a lot of nostalgia in me, being able to recognize a lot of the "cameo" video game characters. I look forward to this one too. dZ.
slab0meat #5 Posted July 31, 2015 I like the nostalgia factor, but Sandler makes it a no-go for me.

Maybe a Wreck It Ralph game should show up on the Intellivision? As for PixelsI'm hoping to see it very soon. Edited July 31, 2015 by mr_intv
Albert #7 Posted July 31, 2015 I like the nostalgia factor, but Sandler makes it a no-go for me. Yeah, the trailers looked really bad, and Sandler is just icing on the cake. It has 18% at RottenTomatoes. I will likely watch it when it's available for rental, because, hey, new retro videogame movie, but my expectations are pretty low! ..Al
Pixelboy #8 Posted July 31, 2015 I saw Pixels yesterday. Critics (a.k.a. most people) just aren't getting this movie, nor should they. This movie is all about fan service to retrogamers. This is a movie that doesn't really take itself seriously, and I would recommend it to everyone who frequents the AtariAge forum on a regular basis. You should really go see it, Albert. Just ignore Sandler (and all the other silly characters in this movie) and turn your brain off before sitting down in the movie theater. If you do, then trust me, you'll enjoy this movie like I did. EDIT: I saw it in 3D, and this is actually a movie that lends itself very well to that.
+Special Teams #9 Posted July 31, 2015 I've always enjoyed reviews by these guys: http://redlettermedia.com/ They just did Pixels. They use bad language, so be warned. If you have time, check out Mr. Plinket's reviews for Star Wars eps 1-3. Spot on!
BydoEmpire #10 Posted July 31, 2015 (edited) Absolutely zero interest. The ads make it look like it doesn't even pay homage to classic games, they use them as a cheesy prop devoid of any respect for the games or the fans of them. It's like they tried to stoke my nostalgia, but they crapped on it instead. It looks like a movie about classic games made by people that know nothing about classic games. At least, that's my impression. Sometimes ads don't do the movie justice but as of right now they couldn't make me want to see it less if they tried. I actually don't mind Adam Sandler... xybot67 #11 Posted August 1, 2015 I saw it and actually enjoyed it.. it was probably the nostalgia factor.

The commercial doesnt show any of all the homage actually given to the retro arcade games.
Vectorman #13 Posted August 1, 2015 I don't get who the target audience is for this movie. Do any moviegoers under age 40 really know who Q*bert is? Are people 40-50 who do have nostalgia for original DK (1981?), Pac man etc, going to pay to see this in a theater? I doubt it. It seems like they would've been better off skewing the videogame references to NES/SNES/Genesis era since that seems to be more the movegoing audience age. BassGuitari #14 Posted August 1, 2015 As retrogaming fan service, it's cute enough. As a movie, it's awful. But, we all expected that.

Wreck-It Ralph seemed to do OK with Q*Bert references in it. Hell, the Simpsons keeps making Citizen Kane references, and I'm pretty sure people born in the 1920s aren't the ones watching it. Raiu #16 Posted August 1, 2015 Well, the problem with trying to figure out who its audience is supposed to be is that the movie is clearly aiming to cash in on the nostalgia for early 1980s arcade games by including all these characters, while simultaneously mocking nostalgia for early 1980s arcade games by making such gamers losers and psychopaths. (And that's in addition to getting many of the details wrong, like Nintendo and Namco - two companies that weren't very big or well-known in the early 1980s, especially in the US - running a tournament in 1982, with games that wouldn't be released until 1983 or later)

Namco /midway games came out in 1980-81 so they would be and were in tournaments in 1982. And q*bert could have been played in a 1982 tournament cause it was common for an arcade tournament to introduce a new game in finals of tournaments. In fact from comments I've heard - I haven't seen the movie yet - I bet the movie is mocking exactly that kind of person. ie: us. It's clearly not aimed at hard-core gamers who know encyclopedic details about these games. It's a freaking Adam Sandler movie - how much clearer do they have to be? It's aimed at the GenX masses, not the tiny minority of us who register accounts on forums such as this and sit and discuss minutia all day. Again - it's a freaking Adam Sandler movie! Be happy they didn't include Dance Dance Revolution in the contest. Or have a Smash Bros. scene set in 1985. Or something just plain egregious that panders to the millenials. Maybe a TMNT cameo or Pokemon tournament.
imstarryeyed #19 Posted August 2, 2015 Really liked the movie and I don't like Sandler movies, but fortunately it's not a Sandler movie per se but he is just an actor in it, and is very humble, good stuff. The references are great and I plan to buy this once it comes out. If you are on the fence I say give it a try it's a joy to see all of the video games in the movie.

Rev #22 Posted August 2, 2015 We are going tonight. I'm not the biggest Sandler fan. But I'll overlook it to see the retro games in the movie. My kids do all know who qbert is....from seeing wreck it ralph. I think the best part of the movie may be where they kill the pixel smurf. Seen in a preview. Hehe.
Atari_Bill #23 Posted August 2, 2015 I just got back from the movie. Absolutely LOVED it! My wife is not an Adam Sandler fan in the least and she even liked the movie and the role he played. Do you have a suspend disbelief on a somewhat stupid premise? Yes, but the story itself, the music, and the homage to the 80's games more than made up for that. Goes to show that I almost never agree with a critic. Nearly every movie I've seen that the critics have raved about has been garbage and rarely have a seen a movie killed by the critics that I've disliked. I will be buying a copy of this when it's released.
