Nutsy Doodleheimer
Hello guys!! I thought I'd make the official Atari 2600 4 switch woody serial number thread. There is a serial number thread for the Heavy Sixer, Light Sixer, Vader, and Junior models. After extensive searching, there is none for the CX-2600A 4 switch woodies manufactuted from 1980-1982. Share your 4 switch woody consoles and their serial numbers. I'll lead off with mine. And the one out of my 5 different 2600's that get the most play time. My official game room system. They're a great find when you can. They only had rev-14 and 16 boards in them so all had good color.

zylon
Well... Sounds like I should be on the lookout then. Thank you! Yep. Woody's are 25% with rev-14. 13 and under had the really washed out color. Vaders are all good color, but 25% had soldered Ic's on rev-18 and some 17's. 14 through 16 give your best results. Nutsy Doodleheimer
have 3 of these, but only one with SN still attached. 82281004 Very nice Sears 4 switcher! I always admired the walnut finish. Need to snag some Tele-Games systems. If I recall correctly. The 4 switch Sears models are the rarest along with the Heavy Sixer? (In terms of the Tele-Games toggle switchers).
+DrVenkman
They're a great find when you can. They only had rev-14 and 16 boards in them so all had good color. That's interesting to know. My Rev 14 has fairly poor color, all things considered - certainly much worse than my Light Sixer. I got it super cheap and when I opened up the case, I see where someone had stuck a piece of masking tape over the RF modulator with the worlds "No video" scrawled on it. Clearly it does have a picture now, just not great - I presume someone found a bad solder joint or something and fixed it at one point. Do you think there's anything I could do to improve the color aside from replacing the RF modulator?

There are also early 14's and late 14's. early 14's had the ceramic caps behind the control ports while later ones had the resistor looking style. 6ers do have better color for the most part, but some 4's get close. Some did not have the added resistor mentioned in the pdf manual. Just add it and it will be much better. Strangely, I have never had a rev-15 in front of me. atari_2600_vcs_domestic_field_service_manual.pdf Edited August 5, 2015 by zylon

Mine has caps that look like small resistors. I see the Tech Tip you're talking about: "Some 2600A PCBs have an 820 1/4 W 5% resistor (P/N 14-5821) installed on the solder side (bottom). The resistor is located between pins 6 and 9 of A201 (TIA) and improves the color reproduction of the unit." I'd love to see a photo of that to make sure I don't mis-identify the pins when I get around to trying this on mine.

This is from the system pictured earlier. it is an early 14 and resistor is not built in yet. Some later ones had it on top right below tia socket. A few had it under the TIA inside the socket so look before you do it. i think we've done enough hi-jacking here. apologies to OP Edited August 5, 2015 by zylon
+DrVenkman
Ah, thanks for that. My Rev 14 looks later than that based on the caps below the difficulty switches. It doesn't have the color boosting resistor added, however. I think I'll do that tomorrow.

spawnshop
I grabbed an un-working 4-switch woody for a mod - here's some images after an LED install. It just needed some cleaning on the switches and an AV cable replacement, and it works great. Just waiting for the new A/V and Pause kits to come in!! S/N: 81134671 It's funny though, all of the earlier posts say that the 4-switch woody's are REV-14 and up, but mine is a REV-12. Any significance there??
