mr_me #1 Posted August 9, 2015 I find that in "Slap Shot Super Pro Hockey" the shooting functions are buggy. From the game instructions: "Pressing either TOP SIDE KEY shoots thepuck in the direction you are skating. Pressing either BOTTOM SIDE KEY shoots iteven faster!" That's what the instructions say, but often the puck gets iced even if you are moving in the opposite direction. It seems to work correctly about as often as it doesn't. If all you do is get the puck, skate down the center and shoot, you likely won't notice this problem. I know you can shoot/pass with the keypad but I don't think that works in hockey. In "NHL Hockey" it reliably shoots/passes in the direction the disc is pointing. I've tried playing on both a real Intellivision and on the Nostalgia emulator. +thegoldenband #2 Posted August 9, 2015 I get the impression this game is buggy in general. Some revisions of it won't even work on an Intellivision II, which is bizarre for a first-party game of that era!
mr_me #3 Posted August 10, 2015 Revision? Was there a running change with the rom program?

+thegoldenband #5 Posted August 10, 2015 Revision? Was there a running change with the rom program? I believe so, though I'm not sure it's been 100% confirmed with a ROM dump. Mattel and INTV seemed to like to fiddle with their games; there's some absurdly large number of different versions of the Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack ROM, if I remember intvnut's comments correctly. mr_me #6 Posted August 10, 2015 Well the game I have is unplayable. If there is a version that plays correctly I'd like to know about it, and play it.
+freewheel #7 Posted August 11, 2015 I'd like to know where these ROM variants exist. I know of 2 confirmed for Poker/BJ but that's all I've ever stumbled across. The INTV is one of those platforms where everyone swears they've played a different version of a game, but no one can actually ever find said version. Collapsing Lupin, anyone? mr_intv #8 Posted August 12, 2015 My copy plays just fine on all my various consoles. Maybe just a bad cart?
+thegoldenband #9 Posted August 12, 2015 intvnut confirmed the ROM variant/Intellivision II issue some time ago. I can't find where he posted the info -- maybe on the programming list -- but here's my post about it: Mystery solved: Joe Z. (also known as intvnut on Atariage) has confirmed there's a known Slap Shot variant that fails the EXEC check on the Inty II. He also mentioned that there's another difference in the ROM, but hasn't analyzed it to see what the change does. It's kind of bizarre that INTV quality control should let such a major problem slip through the cracks! Presumably they fixed it on a subsequent release, but there must have been quite a few unhappy Inty II owners...
mr_me #10 Posted August 12, 2015 I'm not sure which version of the cartridge I have as I don't have an Intellivision II. I found a few copies of the rom file but they are all the same and play with the same bugs as my cartridge. Are there Intellivision II rom files that simulate the Inteliivison II game incompatibility in emulation? Another bug in "Slap Shot Super Pro Hockey" is the tan goalie constantly changes colour to orange. He/she is orange when the puck is the other end and tan when the puck is in his/her end, So one team's four players could be in three different colours. The normal colour for this team is tan and red for the control player. Red is an odd choice. If someone has a rom file for "Slap Shot Super Pro Hockey" that plays without the "shooting" bug please let me know.
+save2600 #11 Posted August 12, 2015 I just gave it a try on the Intellivision Flashback… not being an expert on the game at all and having not logged a lot of time into it (ever), I noticed when you shoot, it always shoots in the direction of the opposing teams goal. Tried pressing up/down/diagonal, but no change. Even when facing the opposite direction, the puck still goes toward the goalie! lol
mr_me #12 Posted August 12, 2015 Someone was kind enough to send my two different rom files for this game. I now have three versions of SlapShot Super Pro Hockey in Nostalgia (three different CRC32 checksums). Two are roms and one is a bin file, so I'm not sure if that means I have two or three versions of the game. E9F71566 (rom) 0FB71064 (rom) BA68FF28 (bin/int) And they all play the same to me, and the same as my cartridge on my Intellivision I. All three have the "shooting" bug. +intvsteve #13 Posted August 13, 2015 The .rom format first came about, IIRC, when the Intellicart was released. It's created from a .bin. If you get the jzIntv emulator, it will include a utility program called bin2rom that will produce a .rom from a .bin + .cfg. You may have three different ones, but until you run your .bin/.int through bin2rom and compare the crc32 checksum of the output of that, you won't be certain.
