Is the woodpaneled 4 switch VCS and the Vader compatible?

I think the reason they did what they did with the all-black Vader, naming it the 2600, is because they introduced the 5200 into the market, before it officially became the Atari 2600 it was simply referred to as the Atari VCS. And here is a little trivia, the 5200 and 7800 are model numbers based off the original 2600 model number

2600 2600
x2 x3
----------- -----------

5200 7800

Pretty slick ain't it? ;)

They called it 2600 also because it was CX2600 in the Atari catalog. They probably decided to use the catalog numbers as the name because someone thought that it sounded cool :)

Yes but they started REFERRING to it as the 2600 when the 5200 came out because the 5200 had it's designation on the front plate, so they redesigned the VCS's top half and gave it the 2600 name on the FRONT of the unit, in keeping with having the number in the name. Had the 5200 not been made they would have stayed calling it the VCS.
