I'll say that while I absolutely love the NES, and I agree with the comment that Nintendo was absolutely on fire (geez 1987 may be the best year for home gaming ever), I don't think of NES games as being easy to start and easy to have fun with. Instead, I think of lots of games like the original TMNT that you mentioned. Very difficult to play to the point of being unfair. I got burned over and over again by games that simply weren't worth the money (Wizards and Warriors) or games that were just not functionally accessible (where's my save code Rygar). I still play NES games all the time, but in my memories it is responsible for a lot of frustration.

I have to say 1987-1990 was the golden age of the NES. And some of the best games were released during that span. I received it for Christmas back in 1988. The NES produced some of the most memorable soundtracks and two of my favorite third party companies were Capcom and Konami. They made a plethora of awesome games for the NES. Some of the best games for newbies getting into the system would be.

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 3

Duck Hunt

Mega Man 2

Excitebike

The Legend of Zelda

Castlevania

Blades of Steel

Bases Loaded

Baseball Stars

Hogan's Alley

Tecmo Bowl

Tetris

Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse

Contra

Mike Tyson's Punchout!!

Duck Tales

I'd put in the original Castlevania over Castlevania III. Dracula's Curse is a great game but it is absolutely brutal and not for the casual fan. Super Dodge Ball is a ton of fun (same series as River City Ransom!) but isn't it fairly rare?

If we are talking about Beginner's to the system...I would also include Super Mario 1, DuckTales, and I suppose Tecmo Super Bowl. I know SMB3 covers the Mario genre, but SMB1 was such a huge influence on platforming and resurrecting the industry, I wouldn't leave it out.

If we were still in the CRT TV era, I would have put Duck Hunt up there, but since the zapper doesn't work on modern TVs, I guess for a beginner, I will reluctantly leave it off!
