airsoftmodels
I am working on picking up an apple //c+ on craigslist. i had a //c new in 1984, and i would love to get one again. i figure i can use adtpro and some 3.5" floppies formatted correctly to recreate the games i loved as a kid. are there any typical failures i should be concerned about? thank you. david__schmidt
The IIc+ is pretty sturdy. Being among the "newest" in the Apple II line, it has the benefit of a little newer chips than most. :-) The thing you'll be concerned about the most is the lack of a 5-1/4" drive, and hence being cut off from a lot of Apple II software. But you can pick up an external one and plug it in the back and still have all the normal function on slot 6.
desiv
... But you can pick up an external one and plug it in the back and still have all the normal function on slot 6. Will that work for games that expect to boot off of the primary drive? desiv
david__schmidt
Will that work for games that expect to boot off of the primary drive? desiv Yes, because the internal 3-1/2" drive is on (virtual) slot 5, and the external 5-1/4" is on slot 6. So the drive is where it's expected to be.

+sm3
I'm a IIc plus owner! I just use an external 5.25 drive. Works fine! Plus get a proper cable to use ADTPro. You will be all set. airsoftmodels
wouldn't it be easier/cheaper to just write all disk images to 3.5" diskettes and use the internal drive? especially those jumbo .NIB files?

For the ones that will work, yes. PRODOS file based programs/games especially. desiv
The Usotsuki
It may be helpful that more and more of the older games are being ported to ProDOS where they can be slapped on 3.5" disks as well as 5.25". Well, the 5.25" disks seem to last longer, but the 3.5"s are more resilient, so... :/
PacManPlus
I actually recently acquired, within the past few months, an Apple IIc Plus as well. (So I was able to put my original Apple IIc away - it's mine from back in the day, so I want to keep it saved) Tried to copy all of my existing software to 3.5" disks (I wanted my IIc to have the 5.25 disks, and the IIc Plus to have 3.5 disks - I'm weird that way) Found out that DOS 3.3 disks won't work on 3.5" disks (as the maximum it can handle is 400 blocks and the 3.5 disks are twice that). There is something called "UniDOS" which uses 'drive 2' as the opposite side of the 3.5 disk so you can use the entire thing. So, I copied all of my DOS 3.3 5.25" disks to UniDOS 3.5". Also, some "kracked" programs won't work because they patch DOS 3.3 to load faster, and with the UniDOS disk access routines aren't the same, so it crashes. ProDOS stuff was obviously much easier to copy over. Basically, I got about 3/4 of my original library over to 3.5" disks (all of my 5.25 disks still worked over 30 years later!) Some copy protected disks I cannot port over: Trillium: Shadowkeep Who Framed Roger Rabbit Activision Game Maker Tetris (the original) Marble Madness Rocky Horror Picture Show (+ a few others) All of the above are the retail versions (i.e. not kracked versions) It was fun working on that stuff again... I'd go back to that in a heartbeat. Used my original IIc up until '92 or '93 when I finally got a PC. EDIT - to answer the OP question, I love the IIc Plus. Tempest
Here's a page with some 3.5" 8-bit stuff. Who Framed Roger Rabbit included: http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/8-bit-games-on-3-5-disk

deadmeow
I remember back in the old days, when I got my Apple IIgs, moving a lot of DOS 3.3 games over to UniDos on the 3.5 inch disks. Much more convenient that way.
The Usotsuki
I got a tool somewhere I have to dig out that can compile an exported GameMaker game disk into a single-load file. Not very efficient, but it works.

I have to give you credit for openly admitting to having a mullet. Didn't understand that look 25 years ago, don't understand it today. But hey, if we all looked the same life would be boring.
