"The Gizzle Wap and the Toxic Isles"(tent) WIP

Since I can't Sleep I figured I'd post the early beginnings of my next game,

This game uses a variation on Bogax's movement code.

There is an over head map.You move the cursor to where you want the Floaty Fin to go and press the button and he will move there. Have the Floaty Fin touch an island and screen will change to a side view where you control the Gizzle Wap. If you want to go back to the map screen, have the Gizzle Wap move to the Floaty Fin on the left side of the screen.

The game is in a very early stage. You can't do too much.

The Floaty Fin is a cross between a dolphin and an AC73 racing yacht. And the Gizzle Wap is the Gizzle Wap.

Update 9

1. Spelled Isle correctly

2. Increased the size of the archipelago from 1 screen to 25. The center 9 screen have islands, the outer 16 are open water. Guide the Floaty Fin to an edge of a screen to take him to an adjacent screen. Go beyond that, weird things happen.

3. Added a knock back routine that will keep the Floaty Fin from getting stuck on an island.

There still isn't much to do, but I had to take care of some of these issues early.

Update 12

1. Changed the position of the islands. Navigation should be easier.

2. Added different flora to each of the island groups except for the starting group. J'Thanian and Belanis ships are anchored at different islands.

3. Added the beginnings of an inventory system. Random fruit and grain appear where the score would be.

Update 14:

This might not seem big, but there are some significant changes behind the scenes.

1. Coordinate system and address system added for island locations for all 60 islands. The game pretty much knows what island you go to.

2. Added a poison meter and life meter. (still defunct)

3. Added a poison type icon which randomly changes at the moment when you visit an island.

4. Changed the back round colors on the island view to look more like a sunset.

5. The J'Thanian ship sails west across the starting screen.

Update 15:

1. The game now knows the size of the island you visit. Small islands on the side view may have as little as 2 screens while large islands may have up to 13.

2. Fixed a bug where the Floaty Fin would swim backwards.

3. Adjusted the back round colors a bit.

4. The Hub now has a blue back round instead of black.

5. Added a 5th poison icon.

6. Varied the islands on the side view to include clouds and different color land.

7. If you sail beyond the open water you will be placed randomly in one of the 16 open water screens outside the archipelago. They all look alike. Good luck getting back. This is to simulate being lost at sea.

Update 18: Enter the Culex

1.The Culex a mosquito/gnat type creature travel in swarms called "ghosts" on the map view. They will attack you if they catch you. They always appear in open water and occasionally appear in the archipelago. If they catch you it will take you to what will eventually be a fight screen. You can return to the map by touching the Floaty Fin.

2. Your cursor now appears near the Floaty Fin when you move to a new screen on the map. This makes it a little easier to escape a Culex Ghost.

3. A tree will appear at the end of the island you visit. Currently, touching the tree will give you an orange and a Fraze root.

Update 19: Fun with numbers err inventory

1. The tree at the end of each island now matches the one on the map. There are 5 trees and 3 grains.

2. When you touch the fruit or grain the appropriate fruit or grain appears in your inventory.

3. You may only carry 2 items at a time. If you pick up a second item it will shift the first item to the second spot. If you pick up a third item it will drop the item in the second spot and shift the item in the first spot to make room for the new item.

4. The 5 islands in the center of the archipelago each have a soldier that has been poisoned. If you touch the soldier, you will diagnose his condition and he will eat any fruit you are carrying.

Update 21: The return of Camy the Zazzle Fly

1. Started using the new version of Stella. Found and eliminated some Jitter I didn't notice on the map view.

2. The Floaty Fin moves faster now and is able to out run the Culex a little easier.

3. Your cursor remains pink.

4. Implemented the Gizzle Wap's sidekick, Camy with a few new tricks.

  1. Camy follows you the same way as in The Strange Red Tree
  2. Press and hold the fire button to use Camy as a shield, He won't stay there indefinitely. He will eventually fly away.
  3. Press and hold the fire button and press up to jump to make Camy fly vertically. He flies more vertically than he did in the previous game. He zig zags now.
  4. Jump/press the button and then pull down to do the jump drop.
  5. You can make Camy hover for a few seconds if you press up to jump first and then hold the button down. He won't hover forever and will eventually fly off.

No bad guys yet. Very soon.

Update 24:When the Culex attack

1. The Culex now have an attack pattern. You cannot leave the screen you are on until you fight off the swarm of Culex. They don't have a death animation yet and they don't do any damage.

2. The Culex appear on some islands as well as the open water.

3. If you are able to get to the tree or the soldier at the end of the island it will temporarily clear the island of Culex so you don't have to fight them on the way back.

Update 27: Big friend, little friend, evil enemies.

  1. The Floaty Fin sprite has been replaced by playfield graphics. He is more to scale to the size of the Gizzle Wap. If you move right off the Floaty Fin screen it will place you on the island or the middle of the ocean if there is no island. To return to the map view move to his tail on the right side of screen.
  2. A Maum Maum, a small bird creature similar to a sandpiper will appear on the Floaty Fin if the toxic level of an island is to high to visit. You will not be able to leave the Floaty Fin if he appears. Generations of Maum Maum have kept watch over the Toxic Isles for centuries and know its secrets.
  3. The Culex fly in a more random pattern and are more aggressive.
  4. You now fall into the water on islands that have sink holes.
  5. The beginnings of a cure routine have been implemented, but may not be evident in game play.

Update 31: Poison control or this project is still alive.

1. Cleaned up a lot code behind the scenes.

2. cleaned up some of the playfields on the islands.

3. Implemented the poison and damage routine. To start the routine, find the soldier on the northern most island on the starting map. He will be sitting on the ground. If you touch him, you will diagnose his illness. There are 5 types of poison.

  • Heart
  • Viper head
  • Purple drop
  • Skull Head
  • Upside down flame (flame tongue)

3. Each poison requires a combination of 2 fruit found around the islands. Return to the soldier with two fruit and one of two things will happen.

  • You worsen his condition, he takes damage and his poison may mutate.
  • You cure his poison. You will see his spear disappear and his life bar will be full. This will open up the next island.

4. The soldier will take damage over time. So don't dilly dally getting him the right cure.

5. If the soldier dies, wacky things will happen. This is still a work in progress.

known bugs.

some times you pick up double fruit. This make things go crazy and I'm not sure why.

Culex Larva can be found on one particular island.

Thanks for the response. Pretty imaginative game, getting quite impressive. I saw the third gizzle-wap series was started and, as usual, panicked I had missed out on the second. Same reaction with Sydney Hunter for CV ... apparently three different Sydney Hunter games in different stages of development.
