Easter Eggs

I am still relatively new to the technical aspects of classic video games. I was just wondering what an "easter egg" is. I am unfamiliar with the term but very curious.

due to the low memory constraints of the 2600, the designers originally didn't have any space to hide bitmapped images in their games, so they would use a simple sine generator to map two curves, which looked kind of like an easter egg. They would hide it in the game somewhere, and it would be triggered by certain in game circumstances that were unknown to the player. It was similar to the 'wearing a flag' or a 'yellow ribbon', the Atari designers wanted recognition from atari, and the egg was their symbol.
