2600 with good music, also what is the best

Recommended Posts

We all know the 2600 had some limits on the sound hardware, but what games got decent music out of it

I know the starpath supercharger allowed for a large image but it has pretty good music

what else is good

Pitfall II had a separate chip inside which allowed for the music. Gyruss had some pretty great music using just the standard TIA chip.

Can't think of any better music than Pitfall 2 from the original releases even though it does use an extra chip.

Enter into homebrew territory though and this beats it hands down.

Big Bird's Egg Catch has a nice classical tune

Mountain King has a classical tune too

Moon Patrol has good music you can toggle on or off

Pressure Cooker tune I like.

Journey Escape had rock music, not done too shabby.

So David Crane came up with enclosing an extra chip for anything other than RAM, eg music?

Because later, companies like Nintendo and Sega did exactly the same.

Those look (and sound) great! I'll have to try those.

Smurf has some decent music as well:

I always thought it was brilliant how the pitch changes in the cave, to make the melody darker and more ominous.

I really can't stand the smurf music ! It tears my nerves to pieces :)

On the homebrew shelf, Boulder dash has a great title screen, you'd believe to hear the c64 version.

And on the commercial cartridge side, I think Fatal run has a technically high music, I'll have to check I don't remember well.

Double Dunk has great title screen music. I agree with BMX Airmaster and Journey Escape as well. Skateboardin' gets forgotten a lot. If including homebrew then nothing on the system beats Juno First.

If we're going to cite every 2600 game that used both voices (or more) for music, I may as well mention Strawberry Shortcake.

I somehow owned this cart, and yes I did pop it in once in a while - a fact which underscores the boredom only made possible by the non-existence of the internet.

why not, actually would be nice to know every 2600 game with music
