Regarding the inability to save your game while running the highly regarded The Legend of Link hack (https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2136/) on the jailbroken Nt Mini,

GreyRogue left this comment about getting it work with MiSTer: "Saving will not work, as it doesn't use the typical save RAM address. I need to decide how to handle this (probably just change the mapper to match the others)."

(source: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=117&t=34603&sid=c2bc443e0bbde5c08ac004d7ac8c8811#p357268)

I know Kevtris is very busy, but wanted to mention this in case he ever comes back to it.

Does this mean the rom itself could be edited to use the correct RAM address?

There's only a handful of PAL Master System games that have a hard time on NTSC hardware. The vast majority of them work fine. Can't speak to the NT Mini SMS core; I've not used it.

Yes, I think every PAL game I tried on the NT Mini did run, just the speed/sound was wrong. So yes, technically you could play it but you wouldn't want to.

You would assume kevtris will sort this now it's being sold as a commercial project (rather than the freebie on the mini). I'm sure I did ask and received reply from kevtris way back in this thread about the SMS core on the mini.

Where can you buy a MiSTer? Is it easy to add cores?

You don't buy 'a MiSTeR', you buy the de-10 nano board, then you obtain or build the daughter boards. You're late to the party for the current large orders of daughter boards that I'm aware of, so you're probably gonna end up having to either build them yourself or wait a bit. The MiSTeR is not designed as a simple fpga in a box ready for retail product, it's still potentially evolving as time goes on and people see needs for more powerful hardware.

You might be able to find someone selling assembled units if you go through the atari-forum thread but availability is gonna be who knows

I'm not in a hurry, I have plenty to keep my busy. Maybe I'll wait a year or so and see what happens.

Cheers for the info

The Sega Master System support is as official as the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and SG-1000, so I think it is reasonable to expect working NTSC and PAL modes for all those systems. Don't expect PAL support for the Game Gear. :P

Where can you buy a MiSTer? Is it easy to add cores?

You can buy the DE10-nano at Amazon. There are expansion boards as well but you don't need them to run a lot of the desirable cores (eg. TG-16, Genesis, etc)

Setup is less complicated than retropie. You basically just need to format the an SD card a particular way and copy stuff over to it (cores and roms).

The SDRAM expansion board also allows you to run the following cores: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_MiSTer/wiki/SDRAM-Requirement-by-cores

The IO board is really only useful if you want to output analog video.

The expansion boards can be found by checking this thread: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=117&t=33613&start=150

There has been recent availability of both boards.

MiSTer's SNES core is better than Super NT.

:-D

Just wait till it gets finished and all the special chip handling and save state support of the SD2SNES is integrated over :D

Then we'll have a $130 fpga device that can play 99%+ of the SNES library with save states

But yeah, I'll still prefer to play on my Super Nt. And I'll switch over to the Mega SG for Genesis when that comes out.

There's no SNES core for the MiSTer, not available at least...

There's no SNES core yet. Nothing that has been released, anyways.

Don't believe the lies!

That's the joke.

Not MiSTer exactly, but there's a pretty far along SNES implementation that's been ported to DE10-nano:

http://pgate1.at-ninja.jp/SNES_on_FPGA/index.html#release

Though no source code has been released yet.

Also part of the joke, I believe. There's been public "showing" of the core "at work" on YouTube, but without source code it may just be a hoax.

Nah, you can download the binary to run on the de10-nano. People have gotten it to run but only a few buttons are hooked up so it's not really playable. Edited by cacophony

Where can you buy a MiSTer? Is it easy to add cores?

Adding a core is as easy as copying a file into an SD card and adding ROMs. It can be done on the SD directly or you can do it via FTP from your PC if you connect the DE10 to your network.

What is a little more involved is upgrading the firmware, needs changing a specific file on the SD card and won't work via FTP. Still rather simple.

Very rarely a change may come along that requires changing the SD card format (such as a completely new Linux image for the embedded CPU). But its trivial to backup contents of the SD, recreate a blank SD with required core stuff, and copy things over. Only had to do it once, but bear in mind I had mine since early days so it was less mature.

Honestly I find it much easier to setup and maintain a MISTer than setting up a RPi or emulation PC.

If I want to play a translated rom off my Super NT's SD card, can I just put the IPS patch in the game folder like SNES9X allows?

Or do I have to download a patched rom image or learn how to manually patch it myself?

Manually patching roms is very easy, there's no reason to look for pre-patched roms. Just download a program like Floating IPS and it's pretty self explanatory.
