Coleco ADAM Super Game Differences

Tempest

Recommended Posts

I've decided to start a thread where we can list and discuss all the differences in the enhanced Super Game versions of games released on the Coleco ADAM. Here are all the Super Games I know of and their differences. I'll update this as we find out more.

Buck Rogers

  • Has an extra level (huge tower gates on a roadway)
  • The small electric gates are now huge towers
  • Includes the mine fields
  • Redesigned mother ship graphics
  • Has a wormhole level after defeating the mother ship
  • High Score table

Cabbage Patch Kigs

This one may or may not be official, its origins are kinda murky

  • Anna Lee's name is shown on the bottom of the screen
  • One of the screens has a different background (a cabbage patch vs a maze)
  • There are flowers on the top of the wall on the starting screen

Dam Busters

  • New title screen
  • Has a "Top Secret" screen before the intelligence report (only on Squadron Leader level)
  • Shows a special newspaper screenshot after successfully completing the game at a lower level
  • Shows pictures of the different crash scenes instead of plain text
  • High Score table
  • Prints out weather reports on the ADAM printer

Screenshots

Donkey Kong

This game is a complete rewrite of the original cartridge version.

  • Two new title screens before game starts
  • Number of players and skill select are on separate screens
  • Shows DK climbing and stomping down the girders at the start of the game
  • Shows DK grab Pauline and climb the ladder between levels
  • Shows Mario's 'broken heart' when DK grabs Pauline
  • Adds "Get Ready Player 1" screen between levels
  • Adds "How high can you get?" screen between levels
  • Barrels are displayed next to DK on the girders level
  • Donkey Kong has animation during levels (barrel throwing, chest thumping, etc.)
  • Pauline says HELP! during levels
  • The girders are blue on the rivets level
  • Cutscene with DK falling and Mario and Pauline reunited is shown after beating the rivets level
  • Springs are included on the elevator level
  • Includes the pie factory level
  • Game Over is shown at the end of the game
  • High Score table
  • Game can be paused

Screenshots

Donkey Kong Junior

  • Includes the Mario's Hideout level
  • Has an all new level (the kitchen)
  • Has an intermission between levels 3 and 4
  • Has different music at the start and some different effects (such as climbing)
  • High Score table

Grogs Revenge

Sub Roc

  • Has the underwater levels
  • The screen design/control panel from inside the sub has been completely overhauled and enhanced
  • High Score table
  • Animated title screen with classical music "Hebrides Overture" by Felix Mendelssohn
  • Each round ends with Mecha Octopus boss battle
  • Additional enemies: fireballs, missiles launched from water surface, green fighter planes

Video

Zaxxon

  • 1 player only
  • 8 skill levels
  • Has 6 asteroid bases instead of 2
  • Has Floating Citadel's after asteroids 2 and 4
  • High Score table
  • Has music on the "Get Ready" screen
  • Ends after defeating Zaxxon High Command at the end of asteroid 6
  • Has ending and music
  • Allows for saving games

Video

And some that never got released (although we can speculate based on screenshots and whatnot)

BurgerTime

  • Unknown

Front Line

  • Looks like a completely different game from the demo

Gorf

  • Unknown

Smurf Rescue

  • Has a new level (mountain)
  • Backgrounds are enhanced (castle and field)
  • Different house graphic on starting screen.

Star Trek

  • Unknown

Time Pilot

  • Possibly included outer space level (2001)

Turbo

  • Unknown

Wargames

  • Unknown

Cabbage Patch Kids

--------------------------

*Anna Lee's name listed on the bottom of the screen

* Has a different background for one screen (cabbage patch replaces the maze)

* Flowers on top of the wall on the starting screen

Grogs Revenge

--------------------

This version was only released on DDP in Canada. It appears to have a bug causing it to crash when you enter a tunnel on level E

* Has three mountains to choose from instead of one

* Smoother scrolling?

* High Score table

Any chance of these ever being re-released in cart/SGM form? Pixelboy? :)

Got a picture of that? Is this a new level or just the 2001 level from the arcade (not sure if the Colecovision version had that or not).

Here's a link to the original thread. It looks like it was an advertisement in a Sears catalog for the CV cartridge version with a pic of the UFO level that was never included.

But that looks like it predates the ADAM. Perhaps they took it out the Colecovision version before they released it? Is there anything that specifically says this is the Super Game version?

It was just for the CV version. I was thinking it was a pic of the unreleased Adam SG version.

Awesome thread! I have 3 (or is it 4?) versions of CPK. I've briefly compared all the dumps and all have differences (although differences are minor between the two that say "Babyland General" vs. "Babyland Park").

Thanks goes to gism_butter for his incredible find that day.

I would really like to get all the dumps for B.C.'s Quest compared, as the super game version I've been reading about from Klasco on Facebook sounds pretty awesome.

I never knew they were different honestly. I always assumed that it was the same game on different formats, but I guess they are different. Someone really needs to go through them and see.

CPK SG may or may not be a real Super Game. My best guess is that it was the start of a SG conversion that never got very far.

I think Jim has provided an answer to this in the past. And then there's that dude Quartex who had a pretty awesome story about how this game was leaked.

Thanks a lot for starting this thread Tempest seeing as it will definetely get me over the 5,000 post mark! :D

Here is a list of game that should be covered in this discussion:

- B.C. 2: Grog's Revenge Super Game

- Buck Rogers Super Game

- Dam Busters Super Game

- Donkey Kong Super Game

- Donkey Kong Jr. Super Game

- Donkey Kong Jr. Super Game (Unreleased, but complete, 5 screen version)

- SubRoc Super Game (Unreleased, but complete)

- Zaxxon Super Game

- The Best of B.C. (Quest for Tires and B.C. II: Grog's Revenge)

- The Best of Broderbund (Choplifter and A.E.)

These should NOT be included:

- CPK: Adventures in the Park 128K - this is really a CV cartridge (16K in size) that was dumped using an ADAM computer to a Data Pack and then the title screen was hacked. It more than likely was just a version that was bypassed for final distribution on cartridge and forgotton about until Quartex came across the PCB in an R&D Lab.

- 2010: The Text Adventure - completely different game compared to the CV cartridge

- Dragon's Lair - only made for he ADAM even though a CV proto/demo rom file of the falling disc level was found

- Temple of Apshai - completely different game compared to the CV cartridge Gateway to Apshai

These will be fun to discuss and see what new info and pics may come to light:

- BurgerTime Super Game

- Front Line Super Game (2 screen demo exists)

- Gorf Super Game

- Smurf Rescue Super Game

- Star Trek Super Game

- Time Pilot Super Game

- Turbo Super Game

- WarGames - not sure if this wouldl have been a direct port of the CV cart or enhanced

Anyway, seeing as ed1475 has done all the leg work with making and posting gameplay videos, those links will be a nice addition as well.

I'll start out with Donkey Kong Super Game....

It looks like there's six screens unique to the Super Game version of Dam Busters. I think the gameplay is the same as the Colecovision.

Title screen (Adam)

post-13580-0-58137700-1443146315_thumb.jpg

"Top Secret" screen right before the Intelligence report. This screen is only on the Sqadron Leader skill level of Adam version.

Three different crash scenes (Adam)

Hall of Fame screen (Adam only)

Title screen (CV US release)

Title screen (CV Canada release) This screen is also in the Adam version right after the title screen. (Not in US CV version.)

CV crash screens (US & Canada)

What is the story behind the prototype version of Super Donkey Kong? The one that has mostly the original levels, the weird version of Pie Factory, and some of the cut scenes? How did that one get out into the wild?

First off, that's the cartridge prototype that TPR is asking about. As far as how it came about, for years many people around here thought that it could have been some Homebrew effort to port the ADAM Super Game version back to ColecoVision cartridge, but that isn't the case at all. It was a Coleco In-House development that probably came about during the development of the SGM, but more likely the ADAM Computer. I say this because over the years, I have acquired a number of ADAM data packs from former Coleco employees that included this rom image on it (originally in CP/M format as the first Coleco rom dumper was a CP/M program) and so the timing of when these were made would have to have been in the early '80s. The last bit of luck I had was a couple years ago when I acquired another former Coleco employees collection and it included a DDP with a dump of this in EOS format, but more importantly the DDP included the rom dump of A.E. as well.

I thought I read somewhere that Nintendo wouldn't allow Coleco to make the Donkey Kong Super Game accurate to the arcade version. Is that a fact?
