Fallout 4 thread

I'm pretty excited to pick up Fallout 4 later this year. Fallout 3 is probably #2 on my Favorite Video Games Of All Time List. The game knocked my socks off but the followup Fallout New Vegas I thought was rather lacking.

I've been trying to avoid reading too much about FO4 for fear of spoilers, but if anyone has any good thoughts or links, I'd love to see them. Who else will be picking this game up on day one?

Totally agree! Major Fallout fan here, ever since the original game. Fallout: New Vegas is my fav of the franchise, but all the games are quite good. (Well, the core games...the spinoffs, eh, not so much. :) )

I almost never buy a game full price on day one. I already pre-ordered the game on Steam.

And I'm really psyched for it happening in my backyard of Boston. Knowing the city quite well, I'm looking forward to seeing all the landmarks and places in the game and how they compare.

I picked up the PIP boy edition so I'll be set back a bit the next few months. I may take a day off of work and play this like I do with the Elder Scrolls games.

I beat Fallout 3 again about a month back on a speedrun just to get back into it.

I prefer the old games over the new ones actually but I still enjoy the new series a whole lot. I prefer not to know anything about Fallout 4 so I'm avoiding any news about it.

I was lucky enough to preorder the Pipboy Edition for PC awhile back for the mods. I had signed up to be notified for the special loot crate but stupid Gmail put it under "Promotional" so I never read it in time. New Vegas is my favorite when it comes to combat. The only thing negative for me is it didn't feel as big as Fallout 3. The casino games are pretty fun though and the one weather mod I have installed is great. Sandstorms should have been in the vanilla game. There's this one mod I have for Fallout 3 that increases random encounters and adds more enemy types. Really makes the game fun when it works right and doesn't crash.

I pre-ordered the pip-boy version. Hoping it comes the day of launch, but since it's through Amazon and I'm a prime member, I should have it pretty quick if not on day one.

Looking forward to it for sure. I'll probably take the night off work the day it comes! I haven't been trying to get info about it either, although I admit I watched a video a while back. Looked great!

I am so mad that I missed the boat on that...I was sick as a dog when the pre-order occurred, and it sold out so quickly. Damned resellers. :(

I loved the original Fallout and its turn-based combat. I bought Fallout 3 for the PC but just couldn't get into it. I loved the world and atmosphere, but I think it was the combat I didn't like. IIRC it seemed like it wanted to be an FPS but didn't quite make it there. I'm very intrigued by 4, though, but definitely not enough to pre-order it. I look forward to all of your reviews.

Wow, this seems pretty big. Just got done reading the article about FO4 in the latest Game Informer and they mention the V.A.T.S. system no longer freezes the game, just slows it. It's probably a good thing, but it will certainly be a big change.

Apparently there will be an option to travel with, and even romance, a companion - but there will be some type of perk for going it solo. The article also says since Bethesda has been tight-lipped, info has been scarce for everyone. I'm just hoping they'll hammer out all the major issues before Day One.

I preordered two PS4 Pip Boy editions and I don't even own a PS4 yet! I plan to scalp one to help cover the cost of a PS4.

I only got into Fallout just before the E3 announcement. Fallout 3 GOTY was in my backlog and I decided to play it when I got back from vacation this summer. I was hooked on it for two weeks straight! So when E3 happened just a couple weeks later, I've been hyped for 4 ever since.

I've since bought New Vegas but it's been the low point of the series for me. I know everyone says it's better than 3 but I just can't get into it. I'm close to the end and I've explored pretty much everything there is to see but it definitely doesn't pull me in like 3 did. The wasteland was so much more interesting in 3 and I actually cared about the different tribes/factions and side quests. In New Vegas every mission feels like a list of chores.

I've never played the older Fallout games, but just looking at gameplay videos I don't think it's something I'd be into. I never liked isometric gameplay and it seems to take way too much inspiration from point and click games. I might be wrong, maybe I'll try them someday.

I snagged the Loot Crate Fallout 4 crate! Anyone else get one? It's pricey but comes with a cool hoodie perfect for the cooler weather I'm thinking. They sold out of the first batch pretty quick, but now they have a second run shipping in December.

Well, I was afraid I'd have to do this, but since they announced the PC specs of Fallout 4 two days ago, I had to buy a new video card.

This one seems like a great mix between price and performance, it's better then the suggested video card, and was a total of $206:

If this game turns out to be better than Fallout 3, I might have to buy a new console. What does base-building mean?

From the Wikipedia page:

Fallout 4‍ 's gameplay is similar to that of Fallout 3, with a camera that can switch from first- to third-person view, but is supposed to feature more appealing gameplay, featuring a layered armor system, base-building, a dynamic dialogue system featuring 111,000 lines of dialogue, in-depth crafting system which implements every lootable object in the game, and much more. Enemies such as mole rats, raiders, super-mutants, deathclaws, and feral ghouls will return to Fallout 4, along with the companion Dogmeat, who is incapable of dying.

Oh, I see:

Yep, I think I'll have to buy an Xbox One or a Playstation 4.

That vid of the scraping/building gameplay reminded me a lot of Minecraft with a touch of Defense Grid...Love it!

Romance your companion, you say?

It looks good from the videos I've seen. Having a Xbox 360, I'm going to have to miss this one (PC isn't powerful enough to run Fallout 4 and I can't afford a new Xbox One/PS4...yet). I also look forward to your reviews and screen shots. If I had the money, this would certainly be my purchase for the new gen console of choice.

If more people would use the Amazon link on my web site when they bought stuff, I'd have enough extra money to buy an Xbox One or a PS4. :D

I promise myself that I will be playing Fallout 4 on a new console some time in 2016. (I'll try to remember to come back to this post in 2017 and see if I kept my promise. :dunce: )

Has anyone looked at the perk list ? First off, skills and traits are completely removed and if you look at the charisma and intelligence lines, there aren't any dialog related perks. Guess there's not gonna be different dialogs depending on the type of character you have.

Seems less and less of a Fallout game to me the more I see and more of just another open world FPS, but I guess I should have figured as much with Bethesda.

My biggest concern is the size of "map". I read it took a guy ten minutes or so to sprint from one side to another. If they didn't want it to be so barren they could have increased the random encounters. I really hope this doesn't become an open world FPS because there's not much of a point to replay it if the RPG elements are taking a back seat. The gunplay in New Vegas was much better than Fallout 3's so I don't think they need to improve too much, even though they got help from Id.

It certainly looks great, but since it is just a single player game there's no hurry to jump in. I'm thinking this is a "game of the year edition" purchase down the road.

I want to hold off as well to see which console gives the best experience after it has been out for awhile (I won't have a powerful enough PC anytime soon). Nice thing about game of the year editions is that they tend to include most of the DLC.

Will see. My backlog will keep me plenty busy.
