Monster graphics needed!

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So, much like Tunnels of Doom, my CRPG has monster graphics that are 2 frames of 16x16 pixels, single color, with both a passive and attacking frame.

Unlike Tunnels of Doom, there are a LOT of monsters. ToD only had 16 unique monster patterns, I got way more than that. And while I've been collecting graphics from various places and also drawing my own, there's a lot of room for more...

So, if you want to provide some graphics for the game, submit them here on the thread! No need to provide the hexadecimal encoding, an image of the graphics will do. I will be putting a "Graphics" credit as well, so provide your first and last name too if you want to be included there. :)

What am I looking for? Oh, anything that's suitable for a fantasy CRPG! Monsters are going to be constantly created and detailed as the content of the game is defined. I AM trying to avoid cliche stereotypes... no orcs for instance... but otherwise everything is welcome!

One last note: I can't promise everyone's will be included.

Now... This is one I had in my files for a while. I have never used it. I can't remember actually making this one, but I've had this hex in my files for over 5 years, so it might have been one of my originals or it might be from another source. Anyway, it looks like a decent one.

Thanks Owen! Two points though...

One, videos are pretty hard to get the graphics codes out of. A static image of the two frames is much preferred. Also, your first video went into a new one with a guy's nasty blackhead being exposed, gah....

Two, the second entry is the rat graphic from classic Tunnels of Doom. :)

Not sure if either of these are relevant or usable:

Gremlin from Ultima: Escape from Mt Drash, aggrevated mode made by myself.

Bikini Girl / Amazon / Succubus (?) who draws a sword/stick. I opted to not make her NSFW.

Cow from my infamous Cowthilde series, here with raised head, bent legs and straightened tail when upset.

10-4. I was unsure where that graphic came from... I have so many hex values stored in a Notepad document that I have forgotten where most of them came from. LOL!!!

I'll submit static images from now on. :)

And yea, that cow is awesome. :)

Here's a few I made today.
If I had an idea what you needed I could make specific critters for you.

@Mindlord

If you also want to take a crack at designing the player class graphics, feel free! Here is the class list:

Bard

Crusader (A battle mage, can use spears, shields, and swords and wear mail)

Hero (Master of everything, only available in solo play)

Fighter

Paladin (No bladed weapons)

Ranger (Master of bows)

Rogue

Wizard

Warlock (The cowled wizard you've already done would fit this perfectly!)

My only (minor) nitpick with the ones you've created above is that they're all side-facing, they should probably face more forward for consistency.

Also, here is a list of some of the monster graphics I plotted out to create... not ALL of them will be used. In particular I'm going to scale back on the aquatic ones...

Ape
Archer
Bat
Bear
Beetle
Bhut
Bird
Cat
Centipede
Crawler
Crocodile
Cultist
Deep One
Demon
Devil
Dragon
Drake
Dust Devil
Elemental Blocky
Elemental Wispy
Faeling
Floating Armor
Floating Claw
Floating Eye
Floating Head
Floating Sword
Floor Mouth
Flower
Ghost
Ghoul
Giant
Giant Frog
Giant Rat
Golem
Grass
Griffin
Hag
Imp
Jellyfish
Killer Turnip
Knight
Liche
Lizard
Lizardman
Mage
Metalloid
Mimic (bookcase)
Mimic (chest)
Mimic (door)
Minotaur
Mushroom Man
Naga
Native Warrior
Octopus
Ooze
Perodactyl
Pirate
Pixie
Raptor
Scarecrow
Scorpion
Sea Serpent
Seahorse
Shark
Sidhe
Sidhe Queen
Skeleton
Snake
Spider
Stalagmite
Stegosaurus
Swarm
Tentacle
Thief
Thug
Triceratops
Troglodyte
Troll
Tyrannosaurus
Vampire
Vapor
Vorpal Bunny
Warrior
Wasp
Wisp
Witch Doctor
Wizard
Wolf
Wolfman

I made the sprites in several different style combinations on purpose to help figure out what style you're after.

Pity though, I like the style of the forward-facing sprites, but I like the versatility of the side-facing sprites. I went back today and applied the forward-facing style to the side-facing sprites. I played a lot of the Gold Box SSI games so I have an affinity for that style for nostalgic purposes.

There are some critters that are going to really hard to make in the forward-facing style. The wolf and crocodile for example would be really hard to make come across forward-facing.

Some adjustments and new things today.

Excellent work! I think your fighter's missing a pattern there though...

I haven't played the Gold Box SSI games, but I do recognize the style, and it's pretty cool!

I think one thing I realized was that an artistic consistency was really needed... you can't have a human fighter, for example, with a little head then have an enemy knight with a ginormous head and different proportions because it just looks weird. I initially drew up my own player graphics as a base, but I gotta say yours are much cooler...

Looking forward to seeing more!
