10 years is an eternity in tech, but a blink of an eye for "classics"

Recommended Posts

Someone posted about the Tapwave Zodiac (Palm-based gaming handheld) in the Modern forum. It's been 10 years since the Zodiac assets got sold off, which got me thinking.

10 years after Atari put Asteroids on the 2600 VCS, the Super Nintendo launched in the United States.

The Sega Genesis was in 1989, the Sega Dreamcast in 1999. Ten years is an ETERNITY in technology.

The Playstation 3 was almost 10 years ago, the Playstation 2 was 15 years ago, and Playstation 1 was twenty years ago.

We just forget that because the last console generation almost lasted that long.

And yet, I still get a chuckle out of VCS Asteroids once in a while.

Not to mention Nintendo systems 30 years ago for the NES despite 1986 being the major launch for it. 2016 will mark 25 years for the SNES, 20 for the N64, 15 for the Game Cube, and 10 for the Wii. Apparently the Wii U's release didn't keep up with the pattern of the last digit with the year being a 1 or 6.

I remember when the 2600's 20th was rolling around, and being amazed that "the first new Odyssey 2 game in 15 years" (Amok!) was happening. Now THAT was almost 20 years ago.

Sometimes I get nostalgic for when I was discovering classic gaming as a kid in the mid/late '90s, stuff people older than me might have been nostalgic about then. What would it be called when I play these games now? Metaclassic gaming?

Yeah 10 years is a blink of an eye in classic gaming, though it doesnt seem like it sometimes because it takes some people that long to develop and publish a much anticipated homebrew game you have been on the pre order list for ;)

Lol.....hey wait, I kinda like the Wii, what am I laughing about. :)

I'm finally putting some time into the original New Super Mario Bros on the Wii because my kid played it a lot at summer camp. I was struck by how Super Nintendo it looked, all low res and digital control. Part of me still thinks it's weird to play a Nintendo game off a disc (hmm, maybe that's why I get all my Wii U stuff digitally?) but otherwise, the game looks hella OLD classic.
