DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: KRYNN SERIES now on GOG

Recommended Posts

I thought about getting into the old D&D PC games since I really enjoy Legend of Grimrock. What would be a good starting game? I've heard good things about Eye of the Beholder.

Don't forget DARK SUN and Ravenloft too !

For a proper D&D cRPG experience...Gold Box Forgotten Realms series starting with Pool of Radiance.

You can transfer your characters from one game to the next. You might want to create a few new characters in Curse of the Azure Bonds though, cause they didn't have Rangers and Paladins in PoR. I just multiclassed the ones I knew I would be dumping in Curse.

EotB is more of a Grimrock style/real time dungeon crawler. It's ok, but If you want to stick with this style game, I'd recommend Dungeon Master and especially Chaos Strikes Back (which is known as the pinnacle of these particular sub genre)

The later games had bugs in them so I'm not sure if the GOG versions have been 'fixed'. I remember running into a game stopping bug in DQK myself.

With that said, if anyone wants a cool tool to use for these games, get this:

Its got an automapper and an editor if you want to cheat. Also the fix it option for camp is totally worth it especially for Poolrad.

Very cool - I played through Pool or Radiance over the last couple months and just started Curse of the Azure Bonds. I played some of Pool & Secret of the Silver blades back on c64, but never finished either. IMHO the games have held up very well. Some clunky interface issues aside, they're really great.

Curse has the bug (which I ran into multiple times before googling what was going on) where equipping certain magic items will drop your imported characters' max hit points. That was really frustrating, but at least now I know to save before equipping anything.

My PoR party had two clerics - I kept the best one for Curse and created a new Paladin. Seems like a pretty good party so far, but it's early. If I continue with the series I think I'll continue to pull over most of the characters, but replace one or two each game depending how good they are.

Eye of the Beholder II is good...like really good. Much better than the other two games, though EoB I is pretty good. These are FPS dungeon crawlers. Little role-playing and borderline D&D rules but great if you love exploring and puzzles. Multiple saves are a must because there are traps that can cause you to be stuck without being able to exit. The games do not warn you when this occurs.

The Gold Box games (Pools of Radiance et al.) do a fantastic job of replicating the tactical feel of old school D&D combat. They have far better battle modes than even Baldur's Gate. Some aspects are very archaic and representative of the primitive state of computers in the 80s. Many dialogues are included in the manuals and you are expected to read these entries when prompted by the game. They are great games but perhaps hard to get into if you were not a fan in their heyday.

To me the gem of the current crop of SSI games on GoG is Stronghold. It's a dynamite 2D city building sim based on Classic D&D. Holds up very well though some aspects of the game are not intuitive given both its age and the rules it is based on.
