4160ste, how rare?

Hey guys. I am only now learning the differences between the different st/f/m, ste. I'm wondering how rare the 4160 computers are. If I find a good deal on it, should I snag it over a 1040ste? Cause the 1040ste looks like the ultamite upgradable machine. Thanks guys.

It's worth at most as much as a regular STE with 4MB of RAM plus a $30 4160STE badge/sticker from eBay. 520STE is the same as a 1040 STE with a different badge and a couple of extra SIMMs, both can be upgraded to 4MB for about $10 or $20.

The only difference is the bridge sticker? Did they ever sell 4160s in a box or was that only created by a new sticker?

There are only 3rd party and DIY RAM expension options for pre-STE machines. STEs have SIMM slots, with only rare exceptions. Atari made a few '4160' stickers to give to some dealers to rebadge RAM upgraded STEs, I've never seen one in real life and wouldn't pay $30 for a sticker

520 and 1040 are same machine only 1040 has 1MB RAM, 520 512K RAM. The 4096 would have 4MB RAM (the max possible) though Atari never produced a 4096 AFAIK. As galax mentioned, someone had a lot of 4096 stickers printed a while ago and charged a lot per sticker, thats how the 4096 machines came into existence. As for being "rare" well , rare as in rare sticker possible yes, rare as in rare machine no, its just a stock 520 with 4MB RAM and a new sticker, not what I would call "rare".

Alright, gotcha. I am asking because I would like to buy a STE with a box. I saw some photos of the 4160 bridge stickers and never even heard of it. Killer, once I upgrade my 4MB, maybe I'll get a new sticker too :-) Thanks guys.

Wait, I remember the 4160STe being a real thing back in the day, given internally to Atari Devs for coding purposes.. Even though not sold retail, they did exist with 4160 STe badges.

It was a dealer add-on upgrade so I don't understand how people shun us who slapped on the badge and added four 1 meg Simms. Smh

I bought a 4160 STe from Atari-Freakz earlier this year (520 STe + 4MB RAM + 4160 sticker). It was the same price as a 1040 with a 4MB upgrade.
