BillyHW
Actually Q*bert is very well done on the C64, as well as most other platforms (the TI-99/4A conversion is surprisingly good.) I also forgot about Arkanoid and Arkanoid II, Aztec Challenge, and Lazy Jones. And I didn't know ballblazer was on C64. Also Krakout was a great Arkanoid clone. There's also like 15 different versions of the game for more level designs than you'll ever be able to fully play all of them. http://www.gamebase64.com/search.php?f=0&t=0&s=krakout&searchSubmit=Go%21&d=45&h=1&a=

It's a shame more versions of that game didn't support paddles (or other games of its type).

What's crazy is I actually bought this version of Arkanoid very late - like after 1992 - and never even thought to try it with old Atari paddles. I've since tried to play in Vice with the 2600dapter and it didn't work. I'll have to try again on original HW one of these days.

My friends didn't even believe me at first. They thought I had a trainer version with infinite lives or so. They couldn't believe me because they never sank their teeth into this game using paddles. +OLD CS1
I'll see your Ballblazer and raise the bid with Trailblazer and Hypa-Ball! Interesting. I had never heard of either of them. Look like a lot of fun. The music for Trailblazer is pretty cool. The C-64 version of Arkanoid was the one that I beat, which was thanks to its generous controller support, which included my preferred method, an Atari paddle controller. It's a shame more versions of that game didn't support paddles (or other games of its type). Huh... never tried with Atari paddles, only with the mouse. I do not recall if I used it in joystick or mouse mode, but I beat the game once and only once.

It's a shame more versions of that game didn't support paddles (or other games of its type). Well, I discovered some things about Arkanoid. It is not a game that is NTSC friendly. If you get the PAL rom, It crashes. I also discovered that it doesn't seem the PAL version has the laser capsules, so I had to dig out an NTSC rom that had the lasers. Once I did that, my paddles worked great, but I was really getting my a$$ handed to me, so I switched from an S-video cable on an LCD back to a 1702 monitor, and I instantly made it to level 18. I'll be playing this A LOT this week to see if I can beat the final boss. Also, I played the game in MAME a handful of times, and got even more impressed with the C64 port. It seems very close to the arcade original.

carlsson
Wongojack, do you mean the lag on the LCD made the game unplayable?
+wongojack
Wongojack, do you mean the lag on the LCD made the game unplayable? No, not unplayable, but after switching to my CRT 1702, I was instantly able to succeed in a way I couldn't on the LCD. There was no obvious difference in lag, but now I actually have a chance. I've experienced the same thing with Kaboom over the years. If I try to play it (even from original hardware) on an LCD, I don't do very well. Must be something about the paddle games that really requires that CRT accuracy. Or maybe it is just me . . . @Billy - yeah, I know, but I've been dinking around with the 1541U2 a lot on an original C64. FWIW, I don't think the emulator would do much for Arkanoid - even more lag. carlsson
Better contrast, sharpness, something on the CRT that the LCD couldn't reproduce? Are the two screens of comparable size, or are you going from a 40+" LCD to a 13" CRT? It is of course well known that LCD:s are designed for fixed resolution so some scaling would occur, which may harm sharpness enough to affect your gameplay. +wongojack
Just to recap PAL Arkanoid ROM on NTSC doesn't work at all NTSC Arkanoid ROM on LCD screen - plays like shit but works NTSC Arkanoid on CRT screen - totally awesome top 10 game for the C64 I was playing on a 21" LCD in native aspect ratio. LCDs just have a lag dude - have you never heard this? There is a whole site designed to help you find flat screens with low lag: http://www.displaylag.com/

BillyHW
Yes, LCD lag is real and it sucks. I'm very sensitive to it too. Definitely for games like Kaboom and Arkanoid it will matter a lot.

carlsson
I'm sorry to say that I often neglect newer homebrews on the C64, although many of those are excellent and well worth playing. I should probably honor that by running a playthrough campaign of them all. Perhaps it is the sheer volume of oldskool games that make newer games drown, compared to the consoles where the original library at best is a couple hundred titles and each new game gets far more attention.
+save2600
Same here... so that list up above is really nice. Would like to try some of them. Is there a single repository or do we have to hunt each one down individually?
carlsson
They're all on CSDb. As far as possible, I tried to link to original releases but for some of those only cracks have been posted on that site. It should be noted that for many of those games exist a handful different cracks with various trainers and possibly bug fixes, so the versions I'm linking to aren't neccessarily the best ones. high voltage
Just got Dragon Wars, from EA, what an excellent RPG, about 1/2 way through the game (I think). Don't wanna give anything away, but it's easy up there with the Gold Box games.
carlsson
I downloaded a bunch of those RGCD compo entries (and some others) and stuck those onto my EasyFlash cartridge. Tonight I played Micro Hexagon with some of my friends, who were just as impressed as I am. Perhaps not the most varied game, and based on a previous Flash game if I'm not mistaken and available in ports for various machines, but as someone said, if this had been on a 16K cartridge in 1984, it would have blown people's minds (just like Yoomp! on the Atari 8-bit would've blown people's minds at the same time, for that matter).
