CV Frenzy vs. 5200 Berzerk

Recommended Posts

I was playing both last night and while both are excellent games, I gotta hand it to CV Frenzy. It totally kicks ass. About the only thing I think is better in the 5200 Berzerk is the voice stuff. I like Frenzy better because

of the ricochet walls, destroyable walls and the cool central enemy you can shoot to affect the robots. My favorite is the giant Otto that makes the mean face when you shoot Evil Otto 3 times. Frenzy's use of "The Rite of Spring" (is that the right title?) in the pause music is pretty cool too.

Anyone care to share an opinion?

Well.. it's kind of hard to compare since Frenzy of course is the sequel to Berzerk. (i.e.sort of like comparing Donkey Kong to Donkey Kong Jr.) :P

It's just that the Colecovision got the port of one arcade game while Atari got the port of the other. I personally like both games. Often times when doing "part 2" of a game it's hit and miss. A lot of people didn't like Asteroids Deluxe and preferred the original Asteroids. However, Defender had a pretty good (if not overly difficult) sequel w/ Stargate. It just boils down to personal preference.

I personally liked the little enhancements they added to Frenzy. Berzerk was pretty much a bare bones game anyway. However, IF there was a home version of Frenzy WITH the arcade voice added, now THAT would be even better! :D (I wonder if that would be possible on the 5200?) :P

I agree that the comparison is a little thin since Frenzy is a sequel, but the basic gameplay is very close so my curiousity of other people's opinions was fueled.

Don't get me wrong, I like Berzerk a lot, but Frenzy just seems to really draw me in.

And you got my opinion. I like Frenzy a lot! :D Now only if it had voice in the CV version (or future homebrewed 5200/8-bit version)... :P

I know mame has the voices.. but it's just a re-use of the Berzerk voice samples. I don't remember if the arcade game used the same voices as well.

I actually like Berzerk more than Frenzy. There was just too much crap going on in Frenzy, and it was too hard to keep track of everything at once. You'd be busy watching our for reflections of your own bullets, and then get hit from a shot that found it's way through a crack in the wall. It's a decent game and all, but I prefer the simplicity of Berzerk.

I still haven't actually played the 5200 version, so I can't really comment however.

I would have liked to have Frenzy in my actual ColecoVision collection, since it provides more challenging action than does Berzerk.

I like them both. I think the controls are better on the 5200 (especially if you have something like a Masterplay ;) ), but I think Frenzy is fun too. They are both pretty challenging especially Frenzy on Game Mode 4. Game Mode 4 is next to impossible.

I didn't have my ADAM at the time, an I knew not where it was.

It turned up in my dad's basement about a month ago. I wish I wouldn't have sold it now.

But I may get to 'borrow' it. :D

Frenzy is lightyears ahead of Berzerk. Not only are the graphics better, but the action is fast and the variety in the levels is greater. This is one of my all time favourite CV game. If you play in game mode 4, and survive long enough, there is an all reflector level that really kicks ass.
