Different type of console holders

Recommended Posts

I have ran into two common Atari 2600 console holders for the wood grain / Vader consoles. One was a black box with smoked plastic cover and wood grain sticker on front. The other was a newer style whit plastic unit associated with the NES system but could also be changed to fit an Atari system. After reading through the 2600 news group I noticed not much talk takes places about these holders or pictures. I notice an Atari system that was stored properly in these units seemed to look new when purchase used at a thrift store. I found an Intelivision II that looked brand new in a similar unit. So what is up with Atari age and not listing these critters and information about these units? I’m interested in reading about this stuff. If you have two cents, please add to this message. Enlighten me please. On the other hand I use to own one of these case with another Atari system. I think I picked up another case but I cannot remember. Most of my Atari stuff is still being stored at my dad’s house. I’ll post more information when I get my stuff up to my new house. Also I enjoy using a hair dryer to remove stickers from Atari carts.

Thank You,

I have various game holder units of different shapes and sizes to hold my 2600 and Colecovision carts, including one like you've described w/ the woodgrain front.

Some hold 14 carts, some only 4, some made of wood but most are plastic. I also have two of the Atari holders that "eject" the game when you push the corresponding lever. I think it holds 6 games? I grabbed these various organizers for cheap at thrift stores a few years ago.

A lot of collectors here have so many carts that they store them in large plastic containers with lids that slide easily under a bed. Other games still boxed are stored like books on shelf units.

I'm sorry I can't recall the correct names for these various storage units. But I value mine just as much as the actual game carts, espeially the ones with the "Atari" nomenclature( sp? ).

P.S. Why are you removing labels with a hair dryer? Do you have replacement labels?

Mostly used for price tags. I have had luck removing bigger stickers too. Sotimes the sticker to the cart starts to come off. But that is easily fixed. I have also tried a few other methods including some that ruined the original cart label. The only thing I have to worry about it how hot the cart gets. I have yet to ruin a cart from using a hair dryer.

I also have a number of these. Spotting them at the thrift is always pretty kickass since as you say it's usually the sign of a well kept console as opposed to the ones I usually find with mysterious brown goo on them. Man, I should start a thread asking what's the weirdest condition you ever found a console in...

Anyway I find the phony woodgrain/smoked grey plastic storage thingies sort of impractical for day to day living. I used one for a while with the console and just some essential games in it. The real issue I think is the fugliness of many of them - an Atari on a shelf inspires nostalgia in casual viewers adn they want to play. The cases inspire bewilderment at my ideas of decor, and averted eyes. :)

Actually, I sort of have a sub-collection of storage thingies for all my stuff. I've got the big guys for Intellivision, Atari, Coleco, even Genesis. I found a small nylon carrying bag for NES, and a shoulder satchel thing for Dreamcast. Never saw a custom case for Saturn tho. I jsut use generics for those.

My favorites are the ones that are styled to look like the system. there are several GameBoy cases that look like big clown-sized GameBoys. A guy also offered me an unreleased product for Genesis - a big suitcase-like thing that looks like a big Genesis. I didn't buy it 'coz he was wanting real money for it.

Now I'm having a hard time deciding what to keep my Game Cube in. Ideally, I'd like something cuboid that resembles the unit. I'm also on the lookout for a case for Virtual Boy and Odyssey 2.

Man, this hobby can take a guy in a lot of weird directions. :)

I can help with the Virtual Boy... sort of. THe Hard Case made for Block Buster are very rare, but...

Performance made a bag that is styled like the VB in Black w/ red trim. Well as you can imagine they had a ton left over when the VB flopped. SO what to do with these bags?

Repackage them as "32-bit Transporters". Yes, a brand new box.

Oh, and to save time they left the bags in the plastic wrapper with the original warranty card that has Virtual Boy written all over it.

I have one opened w/ my VB and 12 games inside, and I think Godzilla said he had one open and one sealed.
