Need help with a new box project

Recommended Posts

Excellent! I hope to have a mock-up printed on Monday and posted here that evening. Depends on how work goes though. I'll post the revisions here when I've made them as well.

Cool. I'd like to see you do the alternate back version as well, as yours is cooler than the real thing. :)

6 1/4 inches long by 3 1/4 inches wide by 2 inches deep

Shouldn't that be in metric and also in French? Won't the Canadian government fine you for this violation?

Either way, Rev is one lucky man.

I'm stunned it took someone so long to use this. Talk about gift wrapped. :)

Well it's always a good idea to keep it wrapped :-D

Especially with Rev after all those back alleys he's worked.

Outstanding, looks like the original. Have you considered producing and selling these repos. If so count me in on any you make.

I would love to mass produce these but it takes too long to make them by hand as I am limited by the stock size I have to print to, 11x17. So my boxes get made in 3 pieces that are joined together as a fully assembled box, no 1 piece flat items. They are great for making my own boxes for the single carts I have that I can't afford CIB versions of, or the occasional trade to someone for something I need for my collection. But I'll never be able to crank them out by the ton enough to make any money off them.

I make them to act as placeholders until I can find/afford the real CIB:

I have since found Pole Position and Dig Dug in original packaging.

Coming soon...

Doesn't count in my collecting mind as actually being complete in box but I like having something to keep my carts in and protect the manuals for the few that I have with original instructions. Someday I'll hunt down everything in original boxes but this tides me over until then just fine :)

1st Revision:

HC01AAb_zpswkqdtxn8.jpg

Resized the panels to match cmart's measurements (my guess was about a 1/4 inch short all the way around), added some of his other notes and tweeked the fonts per mthompson's suggestions. Left the back the same per cmart's request but I will be making one that matches the original on the final revision. Will need to print one of these at work tomorrow to see if I got the sizing correct but it should be close.

Awesome! I'd really like one of these. :)

Just for fun i took the mock-up print I made for measurements and put it together...

This is not the finished design or graphics but it gives you an idea of what the finished product will look like. The controllers simply came wrapped in bubble wrap and a 1 sheet manual that cmart posted earlier. Looking forward to making the final design!

What kind of paper/cardboard do you print on?

I have tried getting boxes printed but the heaviest stock they have still seems much thinner than game boxes?

The stock is called satin finish 100# card by the manufacturer. It comes in 11x17 sheets and can run in most production color printer/copiers. It is a little over half the thickness of original Intellivision box material.

With the game boxes I make the cart retention and manual pocket help reinforce the inside along with extra cardstock strips I apply to the side walls using press laminate. For these controller boxes there is no retention so I just add the extra strips to the sides and hope for the best. It really shouldn't be a problem since a correctly bubble wrapped controller, as they came originally, should take up all of the space and provide its own support.

Do you have the dimensions of the manual page as well? It looks like the same size as Mattel manuals of the era but I can't tell from the pictures.

Whoops! I'll measure when I get home later and let you know.

No rush, still a ways away from being done with this project. I appreciate all the help. Do you have just one or more of these in your collection?
