Sega GAME GEAR Buying Guide & Fun Games

Recommended Posts

The Sega Game Gear is an 8-bit handheld game console that competed with the Nintendo Game Boy & Atari Lynx, but stood on its own with a backlit color display and great accessories. Metal Jesus & Kinsey help beginning Game Gear collectors with the pros and cons of the system, what problems to look out for, modding the screen for better displays, fun accessories, collectable color variants and some games you should buy Day 1.

What Game Gear games would you recommend new collectors pick up Day 1?

Sega Game Gear is so much fun! This coming from a Game Boy kid. While the Game Boy had Mario Land and Tetris, the Game Gear had fun games of its own, like Sonic Drift 2 and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I also enjoy Bubble Bobble and Casino Fun Pak and Solitaire Fun Pak. And I'm assuming there's more I forgot about since I have almost 100 games for this thing. I didn't know about the thing to connect it to the TV, that's cool.

Cool vid, and maybe I need to get myself a modded GG now!  Some great game choices too, especially Ax Battler - I spent so, so many hours on that as a kid!  (and shining force, obv!)  I feel like the library was way, way stronger than anybody really gives it credit for.

I know sports games aren't always the realm of the collector/nostalgia fiend, but the GG had some great sports titles.  World Series Baseball was one of my favorite baseball video games, full stop, The port of NBA Jam TE was pretty fantastic for a handheld.  It may not really be impressive now, but at the time it was the only way to play a reasonable version of the game on handheld and it was FUN!..., and the sports trivia series was frighteningly addicting.  Add in the brilliant sonic games... it was phenomenal!

The GG had such a well-rounded library!  I loved my gameboy and believe me, couldn't put it down.  Stuff like Link's Awakening alone were unbelievable.  But I feel like at the time the overall library for Game Gear really trounced the Game Boy.  I was just playing through Psychic World the other day!

Most underrated console/handheld out there?  I think so!

Those Game Gear mods look great.

I wouldn't have much use for the VGA out, however, I was considering getting my capacitors replaced, now it looks like I want that new screen to go with the new caps!

I might be on the market for a Game Gear and this video is super handy.

I've heard it's also a good idea to recap the unit, is that true?

What's the going rate for a decent working Game Gear nowadays? I see lots on eBay that say "not working" and then a bunch over a hundred bucks which seems crazy.

Recap is mandatory because they are leaking and bad now.  A good working GG with recap is probably around $50.  There's also Majesco model which has slightly better LCD. They look different in that the screen lens has 3 grey ovals instead of RGB color.
